โ€œPioneer. Ahead of her time. Voice for the marginalised.

Paz Errรกzuriz could be described by many superlatives and big wordsโ€”for a good reason: the 81-year-old Chilean artist who took photographs of activists, trans prostitutes, the homeless, boxers, and psychiatric patients during Chileโ€™s military dictatorship under the regime of Augusto Pinochet, is one of Latin Americaโ€™s most important documentary photographers.

In that context, itโ€™s surprising that sheโ€™s now celebrating her first major solo exhibition in the UK at the MK Gallery in Milton Keynes.โ€

This monthโ€™s poem is from a Caribbean-British writer, editor of and artist from East London whose work explores identity, existence, and liberation.

โ€œYou shared with me a life in whichย
you existed in fullโ€”
babbling with my tangential stories
laughing with wonder-filled eyes asย
he relays gesture-filled debates aboutย spacetimeโ€”
born with hands that fitย
like puzzle piecesย
into our palmsย
and which ringย
with the chords of piano Blues.โ€

How are you taking care of yourself right now?

Itโ€™s , a reminder to focus on the importance of caring for ourselves, looking after our minds, and listening to our bodies and our needs, desires and curiosities.

Iโ€™ve been thinking a lot of about softness lately: How to create softer cities where reflection, pause and slowness have centre stage instead of rushing, pushing and excelling? How can we create spaces for listening, learning and sharing in these times that can seem so exhausting and belittling our personal power. How can we better look after each other, collectively and individually?

Personally, Iโ€™ve tried to include more gentleness into my everyday, work and writing: allowing more space between the thoughts, and also to reject, or at least recognise, of any โ€œshouldsโ€, and be more open to explore my actual wants and desires. Reconstructing the patriarchal from within.

Here is the powerful Audre Lorde quote in full, which I came across at todayโ€™s Feminist Leadership course by :

โ€œI had to examine, in my dreams as well as in my immune-function tests, the devastating effects of overextension. Overextending myself is not stretching myself. I had to accept how difficult it is to monitor the difference. Necessary for me as cutting down on sugar. Crucial. Physically. Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.โ€

Have a restful Sunday,

A request from WOW founder, Sara Kรคrpรคnen:

๐ŸŒฟ Call for Stories ๐ŸŒฟ

Iโ€™m currently writing a book about reproductive rights, abortion, and empowermentโ€”a topic thatโ€™s both timely and close to my heart.

Iโ€™m looking to connect with people who are willing to share their experiences with abortion, with full respect, care and confidentiality.

Iโ€™m interested in a variety of perspectives from people of all ethnicities and countries.

This book is about making sure no one feels alone in their choices and about showing the real and complex layers behind every story.

Please DM me or email me at [email protected] if youโ€™re interested.
And feel free to share this post with others who might want to be part of this.

Thank you,
Sara x
