'It is disappointing when people in Army settings criticise others whose work and worship is different from their own – surely there is room for everyone ... To imagine that any Salvation Army expression will become fixed and rigid is to deny the very pragmatism that brought us into existence. It is inconceivable that the God who created a universe full of different stars and galaxies, and who made a human race where no two faces or fingerprints are identical, would want a Church of monochrome personality, music taste, gifting or opinion.
Retrieving the charisms of soul-saving, holiness and serving suffering humanity will impact inherited Salvation Army corps and new expressions of The Salvation Army, both of which are vitally needed if we are to reach into our culture with the gospel.'

'The people welcoming Jesus into Jerusalem believed he had been sent from God to save or deliver them from Roman rule and that he would be crowned king of Israel.
But they were wrong and misunderstood what sort of saviour God had promised them. And their disappointment meant that a week later, a mob – possibly including some of the same people – were calling for his death.
Jesus didn’t come to sit on a throne, wearing a crown, ruling a nation; he came to offer salvation and new life to the wholeworld! Have you got Jesus right? Who do you understand him to be?'

That is, the exercise of the intellect at the expense of the emotions. The theory that knowledge is wholly or mainly derived from pure reason. The dry bones of head knowledge need the breath of life that is spirituality. And the vitality of heart-hand experience needs the skeletal structure that is the intellect. Not least to avoid imaginative Christianity degrading into imaginary - delusional - Christianity. Head, heart and hand need each other.'

Major Joy Webb was a Salvation Army officer whose name became a household word in the 1960s when she formed the first nationally known religious pop group, the Joystrings. This autobiography represents her personal testimony, highlighting key events from her life and ministry and including various moments of inspiration that produced some of her most popular songs. Bridge of Songs also explores lesser known, but no less interesting periods, of Joy’s life – such as her work with the Sunbury Junior Singers, establishment of a Salvation Army centre for drama, and the controversy that arose when she sang at a memorial service for Elvis.
