The Oxford Circus, initially called Regent Circus North, officially opened in November 1819. Its counterpart, now known as Piccadilly Circus, was originally named Regent Circus South. Unlike the elaborately decorated Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus was designed purely as a functional traffic junction without any ornamental features.

Oxford Circus আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে নভেম্বর ১৮১৯ সালে খোলা হয়। এটি প্রথমে রিজেন্ট সার্কাস নর্থ নামে পরিচিত ছিল, যেখানে পিকাডিলি সার্কাসকে রিজেন্ট সার্কাস সাউথ বলা হতো। তবে পিকাডিলি সার্কাসের বিপরীতে, অক্সফোর্ড সার্কাসে কোনো শোভা ছিল না এবং এটি একটি সাধারণ ট্রাফিক ক্রসিং হিসাবে ডিজাইন করা হয়েছিল।

পিকাডিলি সার্কাস আঠারোশ উনিশ সালে রিজেন্ট স্ট্রিটকে পিকাডিলির সাথে সংযুক্ত করার জন্য তৈরি করা হয়েছিল। "সার্কাস" শব্দটি ল্যাটিন শব্দ "সার্কুলাস" থেকে এসেছে, যা "বৃত্ত" বোঝায়, যা এর মূল বৃত্তাকার আকৃতিকে প্রতিফলিত করে। বছরের পর বছর ধরে, এই এলাকা উল্লেখযোগ্য পরিবর্তন সহ্য করেছে, যার মধ্যে রয়েছে নিওন সাইন এবং শ্যাফটেসবুরি মেমোরিয়াল ফাউন্টেনের সংযোজন, যা এটি লন্ডনের শহুরে ল্যান্ডস্কেপের একটি কেন্দ্রীয় স্থান করে তুলেছে।
