Yesterday morning I went to set up this installation display at Nottingham County Hall foyer for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. It features props from my latest animation and hopefully it will help to give people a better understanding of domestic violence and abuse. It's a pleasure to have the opportunity to contribute towards positive change.

We've been working on a project with the University of Sheffield and Sheffield NHS Teaching Hospitals recently. The inspiration for an animation were drawings and writing from research workshops with a group of South Asian women. This led me to creating delicate and subtle paper cut outs that reflected some of the sensitivity that was involved in the project. Using handmade paper with imperfections and tactile surfaces, paired with bold shapes and clear cut lines to represent the complexity in understanding one another when faced with language barriers.

We were thrilled to capture Advance's 3 year strategy launch at the Institute of Contemprorary Arts in London last year. It's always great to see people come together with a collective focus. Especially for such a great goal of reducing violence against women and girls.

This is the second of the 'When We Share' poem animations. This animation acknowledges the ongoing challenges that the women face as they move through their life after sharing their trauma. They are sometimes tasked with undertaking the process of pressing criminal charges against their abuser. At the same time, they are trying to rebuild their lives in the community, wanting to be believed, wanting to be treated with respect and patience, and ultimately simply wanting people to listen to their voice.

This is the first of the 'When We Share' poem animations. It identifies the initial struggles and feelings that women face when they first declare their experience of abuse. It felt to me as if Daffodil would be relentlessly confronted by one situation after another. She would be forced to react to each and at times try to escape, and yet no matter what she did she would always find herself in yet another challenging space, having to face yet more judgement, and more stigmatism, whilst at the same time trying to find her way through a complex maze of emotions.

Tonight I'm talking at Juno WA Annual Celebration evening to launch and discuss an animation project funded by a grant from Arts Council England . We worked closely with a group of women to try and help viewers to understand what it's like to share their experience of domestic violence and abuse with someone. This is a teaser video with clips from the two animations created for the project.

Back in 2023 I received an Arts Council grant to create stop motion animations in response to a collaborative research and arts project with a group of women at who kindly shared their feelings with us around domestic violence and abuse. They created a character called Daffodil who I then made out of wool to use within my animations.

Here's the NHS animation scene from my last post showing some behind the scenes set up. It's just a few seconds from the film that was a few minutes long but it takes a lot of planning, building, set up, shooting and editing for those precious seconds.

It's been a very busy 12 months for stop frame animation... back to back animations have kept me busy. This time last year in the new studio I was setting up a scene for the NHS about how patients feel to be under observations. It's a nice feeling to see something you've been working on for months come to life bit by bit.

🎉⭐️So pleased to have been awarded Bronze in the peoples choice category at the earlier this week. We attended the awards ceremony at the flagship Odeon Cinema in Leicester Square and had a brilliant evening of celebration. See Speak Hear produced the film for that got us there but the real thanks goes to all the amazing people who let us visit their homes and film their families and of course to all those who voted for us.
