• Of all the husband/wife duos in Country Music, WILMA LEE & STONEY COOPER enjoyed one of the more extraordinary careers, being operative from the late 30s until Stoney’s death, in 1977.
• Remarkably, throughout this period they continued to perform in a traditional, old school Appalachian Mountain music style, ignoring all contemporary trends, registering their biggest hits in the late 50s, directly in the teeth of Rock & Roll, Rockabilly and the newly-emergent Nashville Countrypolitan sound.
• In 1974, Wilma Lee was awarded the title of “The First Lady Of Bluegrass” by the Smithsonian Institute.
• This compilation presents the Very Best of their singles for Columbia Records, between 1949-54, and includes many sides which are difficult to find elsewhere on CD.

• JOHNNY OTIS - aka “The Godfather Of R&B” - was one of those men to whom the phrase “A Living Legend” was applied throughout his entire career.
• As a singer, musician, composer, bandleader, record producer and talent scout he went on to become a seminal influence on both R&B and Rock & Roll.
• This compilation is the first in a two CD mini-series which anthologises virtually everything that he recorded between 1952-57 for Don Robey’s famed Peacock and Duke labels, in Houston, Texas.
• In addition to Otis’ own releases it features sides on which his band backed artists like Big Mama Thornton, Joe “Mr Google Eyes” August, Johnny Ace, Joe Fritz, Little Richard and Junior Ryder, and which Otis, in turn, produced.
• This is the companion volume to “Johnny Otis, The Duke/Peacock Sessions, Part 2, 1954-57” (JASMCD3324).

Carmen Taylor – Oh Please! | The Complete Singles As & Bs | 1951-1962

• She wrote hit songs for R&B giants the Clovers, Clyde McPhatter and the Cookies, she recorded with some of the best musicians and arrangers of her era, she recorded almost three dozen sides during the period covered by this Jasmine collection and she went on to enjoy a more successful second career in the Latin music market, as Elena Madera.
• Yet despite making records for a decade and a half, almost nothing definite is known about Carmen Taylor, whose early life is a succession of ‘may have’s. No photos of her from the 1950s are known to exist – our glamorous cover shot is from the early 60s – and sadly most people with whom she would have worked are no longer around to share their
memories of her.
• Fortunately music lasts longer than memories and Jasmine’s “Oh Please!” brings together all the surviving masters that Carmen is known to have cut between 1950 and 1962, for the first time in one collection.
• Carmen sadly never had a hit – and when you heard some of the recordings here you will have to wonder why that was so – but at her considerable best she could hold her own with any of her more successful contemporaries such as her former Atlantic label mates Ruth Brown and La Vern Baker.
• A quality collection from a quality artist who deserved a far greater level of success than she achieved, and a must for all fans of great female rhythm and blues.

Delta Rhythm Boys – A Sittin And A Rockin | Hottest Shots 1940-1950

• Like those of their contemporaries the Ink Spots and the Mills Brothers, the 1940s recordings of the Delta Rhythm Boys are at the roots of what first became Doo W*p before evolving into the great Group Soul of the 1960s and 70s – perhaps even more so, as their upbeat, vibrant style was more directly connected to what was to come in the Rock ‘n’ Roll era.
• Here for the first time in the UK is a collection of their best work from the first ten years of a career that spanned five decades, “A Sittin’ And A Rockin’” puts its emphasis on their up-tempo recordings, although the Deltas also recorded many fine ballads during this time, of course.
• Many of the inclusions here were written by the group’s nominal leader and longest serving member Otha Lee Gaines – a Delta Rhythm Boy from the late 1930s to the late 1980s – who frequently put lyrics to Jazz standards, usually with the permission and endorsement of the likes of Count Basie and Duke Ellington.
• A great listen for any fan of 1940s black American music and a history lesson for anyone who would like to know more about where the more modern styles of soul singing originated, this collection shines further light on both, in fine style.

Eddie Calvert – The Man With The Golden Trumpet

• During the 1950s, EDDIE CALVERT, aka “The Man With The Golden Trumpet”, was one of the most popular entertainers in the UK, a huge star on the old Variety circuit, and a radio and television perennial.
• He also registered a stack of hit records and had a bona-fidé Gold Disc hanging up in the parlour.
• His first significant hit, ‘Oh, Mein Papa’, topped both the UK and US charts and he had further successes in the UK, including another chart-topper, ‘Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White’.
• This compilation is drawn from his singles releases between 1951 and 1962 and presents his Greatest Hits, and more.
• Eddie Calvert compilations have been pretty thin on the ground over the years, and this set includes a number of sides that hadn’t previously appeared on CD, which makes it doubly welcome.

• This unique compilation presents the original versions of many of the numbers that they either recorded, or were staple elements of their live sets.

Phil Upchurch – You Can’t Sit Down

• One of the more memorable U.S. Instro hits of 1961 was the irrepressible ‘You Can’t Sit Down (Part 2)’, by the PHILIP UPCHURCH COMBO.
• Although only a moderate-sized chart rider, it became a million-seller.
• At the time of its success, nineteen-year old Upchurch was doubling as the guitarist in Dee Clark’s band, and a session player for Vee Jay Records.
• He went on to carve out a long and distinguished career as a Soul, Jazz and Blues session guitarist, alongside a parallel solo career.
• This compilation deals with his brief sojourn as a R&B /Pop instrumentalist, on the back of his hit single.
• It comprises two LPs, “You Can’t Sit Down Part Two” and “The Big Hit Dances”, plus a couple of contemporaneous singles.
• Much of this material is as rare as unicorns’ manure, and is virtually impossible to find elsewhere on CD.

Helen Shapiro – The Jasmine EP Collection

• Fourteen year-old HELEN SHAPIRO was a natural live performer, blessed with a phenomenal voice.
• She took the UK by storm in 1961, topping the charts with two of her first three releases, ‘You Don’t Know’ and ‘Walkin’ Back To Happiness’.
• Helen quickly established herself as a major international star, and global sales of her early 45s each topped a million.
• This compilation is drawn from EPs issued in the UK, France and Sweden in 1961 and ’62, and features sides from a couple of dedicated EPs alongside selected hits and LP cuts.
• Included herein are French language versions of two of her hits, plus their B-sides, from an unfeasibly rare French EP: ‘Tout Ce Qu’il Voudra’ (‘Tell Me What He Said’), ‘J’ai Tant De Remords’ (‘I Apologise’), ‘Parlons D’Amour’ (‘Let’s Talk About Love’) and ‘Sans Penser à Rien’ (‘Sometime Yesterday’).

• Since Carl entered the Sun Studios in Memphis in December 1955 to record his own version there have been more than 300 subsequent vocal and 30 instrumental takes on BSS, making it arguably the most versioned song of its type.
• This Jasmine collection brings together pretty much every variant we could gather from the 1950s and early 1960s, from not just the US but also the UK, Germany and Australia – almost 20 of them from 1956 alone, a measure of just how popular a song it was at its chart peak.
• Some of these you will know, some you may not know, and even possibly one or two that you will feel you were better off not knowing – but the spirit of the original is alive in the majority of these 25 pairs of ‘Shoes’, whoever is wearing them!

Conway Twitty – C’est Si Bon – The Pick of His MGM Years

• Conway Twitty went from rockabilly, to rock ‘n’ roll, to pop balladeer over a five-year period while signed to MGM RECORDS. This collection gathers together all his hit singles and the A sides of his less successful releases, some B sides and the limited edition 33rpm stereo singles he released on that label between 1958 and 1962.
• It starts with his multi-million selling “It’s Only Make Believe”, ends with his last single for the label and includes recordings that radio support suggests the wrong sides were occasionally chosen as the A side.

Mississippi John Hurt – Ain’t Nobody’s Doggone Business

• Country Blues singer/guitarist MISSISSIPPI JOHN HURT was known for his uniquely dextrous fingerpicking technique, his gentle, half-whispered vocals, and his soft-spoken songs inspired by Gospel and Folk music.
• The inclusion of traditional songs in his repertoire and lack of then-modern Blues influences on his style, establish Hurt as a firm link between the 19th and 20th centuries.
• Despite cutting a handful of memorable 78s for OKeh Records in 1928, Hurt remained largely forgotten until being rediscovered in the early 1960s, which led to him being eagerly embraced by a new generation of Blues aficionados and musicians.
• This compilation features the thirteen surviving sides he recorded for OKeh in 1928, augmented by eleven live tracks recorded in the early 60s, following his re-emergence.
