• Of all the husband/wife duos in Country Music, WILMA LEE & STONEY COOPER enjoyed one of the more extraordinary careers, being operative from the late 30s until Stoney’s death, in 1977.
• Remarkably, throughout this period they continued to perform in a traditional, old school Appalachian Mountain music style, ignoring all contemporary trends, registering their biggest hits in the late 50s, directly in the teeth of Rock & Roll, Rockabilly and the newly-emergent Nashville Countrypolitan sound.
• In 1974, Wilma Lee was awarded the title of “The First Lady Of Bluegrass” by the Smithsonian Institute.
• This compilation presents the Very Best of their singles for Hickory Records, between 1955-62, which includes a dozen C&W chart hits and several sides which are difficult to find elsewhere on CD.

• JOHNNY OTIS - aka “The Godfather Of R&B” - was one of those men to whom the phrase “A Living Legend” was applied throughout his career.
• As a singer, musician, composer, bandleader, record producer and talent scout he went on to become a seminal influence on both R&B and Rock & Roll.
• This compilation is the second in a two CD mini-series which anthologises virtually everything that he recorded between 1952-57 for Don Robey’s famed Peacock and Duke labels, in Houston, Texas.
• In addition to Otis’ own releases it features sides on which he and his band backed artists like Lovey Lewis, Johnny Ace (including ‘Pledging My Love’), The Sultans, Junior Ryder, Joe “Mr Google Eyes” August, Marie Adams and Big Mama Thornton, and which Otis, in turn, produced.

The “5” Royales Story – Think | Part Two 1957-1962

• THE “5” ROYALES fused elements of Gospel, Jump Blues, R&B and Doo-Wop together to become a hugely influential link in the early evolution of R&B, R&R and Soul.
• They were billed with the “5”" in quotation marks, in acknowledgement that they generally comprised six members.
• The second in a two-volume set, this compilation traces their career from 1957 to 1962, and also includes a handful of sides recorded by bass singer/guitarist/songwriter Lowman Pauling, billed as El Pauling, in conjunction with the group’s longtime pianist Royal Abbit.
• A number of regional and national hits are featured including a trio of songs, ‘Think’, ‘Dedicated To The One I Love’ and ‘Tell The Truth’, which were successfully covered by James Brown, The Shirelles, and Ray Charles, respectively.

Various Artists – Gene Phillips In Session, 1945-1954

• A talented and innovative electric guitarist, Eugene Floyd Phillips landed on the West Coast with the famous Mills Brothers and remained to carve out his own career as a singer and bandleader with the Bihari brothers and their fledgling Modern Records.
• Parallel to his own career, Phillips was an in-demand session musician regularly on call from the mid-1940s to top L.A. record producers such as Maxwell Davis, Lloyd Glenn and Jake Porter; this set showcases the best of Phillips session work on both standard electric guitar and the more unusual lap-steel.
• His picking enhanced early recordings by the likes of Wynonie Harris, Amos Milburn and Johnny Otis along with more obscure names such as Duke Henderson, Henry Hayes and Louise Beatty, all featured here - not to mention Percy Mayfield's R&B chart hit, "Strange Things Happening" - with a smattering of Phillips' own rare instrumental numbers.

Harry Secombe – The Heart of a Clown | The Early Years

• Harry Secombe was many things. Starting his career as a comedian and in later years TV presenter, but from the start he always included singing in his act. Classically trained by the legendary Manlio di Veroli, he was initially signed to HMV for three releases and then to Philips records, where he remained for the best part of 25 years.
• His early releases are a greatly neglected part of his catalogue. Concentrating on his lighter
recordings from the period, the majority of these original recordings have never been reissued, some never making it further than 78rpm discs, and others later re-recorded, leaving the originals overlooked.
• Also included is his recording of Vesti La Giubba, which reached no. 16 in the pop charts despite its operatic origins, a feat only matched by Pavarotti some 35 years later.

Ken Levy and The Phantoms & The Jumping Jewels – Kings of Eurotwang!

• After R&R guitar instro’s became hugely popular in the US and the UK in the late 50s, by 1961, Europe was awash with groups of Shadows clones.
• Some of these enjoyed commercial success, most didn’t; this compilation features two groups who did.
• Although THE PHANTOMS originated from Cambridge, England, they became huge stars after relocating to Sweden, where they realigned as KEN LEVY & PHANTOM; they also enjoyed popularity in neighbouring Norway and Finland.
• Conversely, THE JUMPING JEWELS emanated from The Netherlands and went on to enjoy successes throughout mainland Europe, Asia and South America, as well as their native Holland.
• Whilst not quite as rare as unicorns’ manure, a lot of the sides on this compilation are damnably difficult to find elsewhere on CD, notably in the UK, making this something of a must-have for European Instro fans/collectors.

• Fronted by the distinctive voice of Hal Miller, New York quartet the Rays scored one of the most memorable double-sided hits of the classic Rock ‘n’ Roll era in 1957 with the original versions of ‘Silhouettes’ and ‘Daddy Cool’, two Hall of Fame classics that have endured for almost 70 years, and that will live on in Doo-Wop history forever.
• As the title of this CD containing 30 examples of their craft (almost everything they ever recorded) implies, they were indeed ‘Bob’s Crew’- the ‘Bob in question being songwriter-producer Bob Crewe who, with his own writer-producer partner Frank Slay Jr., discovered the group in 1955 and worked with Hal Miller and an ever-changing line up of Rays
through to the mid-60s.
• The Double Dynamite of ‘Silhouettes’ and ‘Daddy Cool’ may have provided the Rays with their career hit, but it was not their only hit and several more of the fine tracks collected here also breached the lower reaches of the US Hot 100.
• From the Rays, Slay moved on to work extensively with Freddy Cannon while Crewe steered the Four Seasons (who appear on two tracks here as incognito Rays!) to global superstardom in the 60s. These, though, are the recordings that shaped their future success as ‘backroom boys’.
• Here are 30 great slices of Big Apple Doo-Wop and early soul that mostly should have fared better than they did back in the day, and that now show the Rays to be an important bridge between the black American music of the 1950s and the 1960s, collected by Jasmine for the first time on a UK CD.

• Between the late 1940s and mid-1950s, the exciting steel guitar sounds of Wesley ‘Speedy’ West could be heard on dozens if not hundreds or thousands of recordings, from hillbilly to pop and far beyond and by artists as diverse as Doris Day, Spike
Jones, Tennessee Ernie, Bing Crosby and even Frank Sinatra – as well as finding time to record several dozen instrumental duets with his ‘regular’ guitar playing chum Jimmy Bryant.
• He may not have played on the 6000 sides that has been claimed in the past, but Speedy was certainly among the busiest session players of his time, and the 30 tracks featured on Jasmine’s new salute to his session work are but a small overview of a much bigger body of work that features his always recognisable stylings.
• It’s probably true to say that the pedal steel was introduced to pop sessions primarily because of Speedy, and though he was not the last or only steel player to work on pop sessions he was easily the busiest and most prolific – as well as always being the most immediately recognisable! This superb mixture of hits and rarities will provide any listener with an appetite to hear more
• If you don’t know the name of Speedy West, you will know the names of many of those he worked with – a master of his craft playing with masters and mistresses of theirs and truly an invincible “Man of Steel”.

The “5” Royales Story – Baby Don’t Do It | Part One 1951-1956

• THE “5” ROYALES, who fused together elements of Gospel, Jump Blues, R&B and Doo-Wop, were an important, hugely influential link in the early evolution of both R&R and Soul.
• They were billed with the “5”" in quotation marks, in acknowledgement that they generally comprised six members.
• Many of their hits were penned by bass singer/guitarist, Lowman Pauling, and featured the soulful lead voice of Johnny Tanner.
• The first in a two-volume set, this compilation traces their evolution from The Royal Sons Quintet, a 1951 Gospel group, to the back end of 1956, when they were at their commercial peak.
• All their early R&B hits are featured herein, notably the chart-toppers ‘Baby Don’t Do It’ and ‘Help Me Somebody’.
