Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs – Hits and Classics, 1951-1962

• Having previously anthologised the early years of bluegrass icons Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs in our recent CD “Lester And Earl”, Jasmine now carries their story forward with “Earl And Lester” which chronicles their shellac and vinyl activity from 1950 to the early 60s, presenting their best 78s and 45s from this period in chronological order of release
and including all of their Billboard ‘Country & Western’ chart hits from the time.
• F&S recorded in excess of 100 songs during the period covered by this collection, including many songs that have gone on to become bluegrass standards. Only a handful charted, towards the end of the 50s and into the early 60s, but many of their releases were very big sellers over a period of time, and their popularity was enough for Nashville’s famous ‘Grand Ole Opry’ to invite the duo to become members in the mid-50s.
• Their biggest hit ‘The Ballad Of Jed Clampett’ – the theme from the long running US TV series ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ – closes this collection. It remains the only bluegrass recording to top the C&W charts and one of only two to make the Hot 100 Pop charts, both of them by F&S incidentally.
• These peerless performances show exactly why these bluegrass trailblazers were so popular for so long, and why they continued to be beyond the time frame of this collection and up to the dissolution of their partnership at the end of the 60s.

• When Led Zeppelin first emerged, in 1968, New Musical Express scribe Charles Shaar Murray famously hailed their playing style as “Blues on steroids”.
• Rolling Stone later called them “The heaviest band of all time”, “The biggest band of the Seventies” and “One of the most enduring bands in Rock history”.
• However, their “adaptations” of various Blues and R&R classics frequently landed them in trouble, for breaches of copyright, which led to several well-publicised court cases.
• This compilation presents twenty-eight prime examples of Led Zeppelin’s roots, with the emphasis very much on those Blues icons - Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Robert Johnson, Otis Rush, Blind Willie Johnson, Sleepy John Estes, etc - whose tunes they played on steroids.

Yank Rachell – Tappin’ That Thing, 1929-1941

• YANK RACHELL was a Bluesman with a very real difference; although he could - and frequently did - play guitar, his instrument of choice was the mandolin.
• This compilation covers the first phase of his active musical career, between 1929 and 1941, at which point the recording careers of most Blues musicians was put on hold, following the U.S. entry into WWII.
• Included herein are his 1940s hits, ‘Bye-Bye Blues’ and ‘Tappin’ That Thing’.
• During the mid 1940s Rachell rather fell off the radar, and remained largely forgotten until his rediscovery by Blues historian Bob Koester in the early 60s, when he started playing the college-led Folk Revival circuit.
• This is something of a star-studded set, as his accompanying musicians on these sides include Sleepy John Estes, Joe Williams, Sonny Boy Williamson I, Alfred Elkins and Washboard Sam.

• The most famous Cajun song of all, perceived as “The Cajun National Anthem”, ‘JOLE BLON’ had its provenance in several traditional tunes, and has had its authorship claimed by countless writers over the decades.
• By common consensus, the earliest recorded version was ‘Ma Blonde Est Partié’, by Amédée Breaux, Ophé Breaux & Cléoma Breaux, was cut in April 1929.
• But the most celebrated recording was by Harry Choates, a huge C&W hit during early 1947.
• Choates’ 78rpm record not only inspired a raft of cover versions, it provided the impetus for an entire subculture of spinoffs, many of which are featured on this unique compilation, which presents “THE ADVENTURES OF JOLE BLON”, between 1929 and 1962.
• Other artists included herein include Moon Mullican, Roy Acuff, Cliffie Stone, Wayne Raney, Bob Wills, Hank Snow, Nathan Abshire, Waylon Jennings, and more.

Miyoshi Umeki – Sayonara | The Rare Singles

• Myoshi Umecki first earned fame as a nightclub and recording star in her native Japan. She emigrated to the United States and became an even bigger star, becoming the first Asian to win an acting Oscar for "Sayonara," earning a Tony nomination for her Broadway debut in "Flower Drum Song," a Golden Globe nomination for the film version, and an Emmy nomination for her starring role on TV's "The Courtship of Eddie's Father."
• She also signed a contract with Mercury Records and all of her singles are included here for the first time since their original release in the 1950's.

Rosemary Squires – Must Be Catching

• A hugely popular songstress in the 50s and 60s, Rosemary Squires was known as “The British Doris Day”.
• She also enjoyed a parallel career singing radio and TV jingles, the most memorable of which was “Hands that do dishes can feel soft as your face, with mild green Fairy liquid...”
• Although precious little of her catalogue has thus far been reissued in the digital era, this compilation presents the very best of her early recordings, from her first single in 1956, to the end of 1962.
• Included in its entirety is “My Love Is A Wanderer”, an LP she cut in the U.S. in 1957, which has not previously been issued in the U.K.
• Also featured are several of her 45s which have never been on CD before, making this a genuinely indispensable package for Rosemary’s fans.

Caterina Valente – A Date With… The Hi-Fi Nightingale

• The multi-talented and multi-lingual Miss Caterina Valente came from a family of entertainers to become one of the biggest international stars of the 1950s and 1960s in particular. Showbusiness was in her blood, and she had the talent to ensure that success would be forthcoming – and sooner rather than later.
• Caterina recorded in excess of 1300 songs during a career that really got underway in the early 1950s and eventually spanned seven decades. Jasmine has anthologised some of these in a previous compilation, but “A Date With The Hi Fi Nightingale” takes her career back to its beginnings, pairing her first two ten inch (mostly) English language albums and adding almost all of her acclaimed 1958 set “A Toast To The Girls”, in
which she paid tribute to many of her peers and influences.
• This collection marks the first time that these albums have appeared on CD in the order they were released, and in the same running order as their vinyl equivalents from almost 70 years ago.
• All of her breakthrough hits are featured – including the global smash ‘The Breeze And I’ and her first European hit ‘Malaguena’. These are the recordings that put Caterina on the road to worldwide fame, and they sound as powerful now as they did when originally released.

• This compilation of vintage Everly Brothers cuts is drawn from EPs issued in the U.S., the U.K., France and West Germany, between 1957 and 1962.
• Phil and Don were of course at their creative and commercial peak during this period, selling millions of records worldwide.
• Nine of the sides featured herein were penned by Felice & Boudleaux Bryant, who wrote so many of The Evs’ hits.
• However, this set omits their hits (which can be found on “Walk Right Back, The Singles Collection 1956-62”, JASCD792), in favour of lesser-known LP tracks, drawn from classic albums like “They’re Off And Rolling”, “Songs Our Daddy Taught Us”, “It’s Everly Time”, “A Date With The Everly Brothers”, “Both Sides Of An Evening” and “Instant Party!”.

Danté & The Evergreens

• Danté & The Evergreens are invariably perceived as one-hit wonders, for their U.S. Top 20 cover of The Hollywood Argyles’ ‘Alley-Oop’.
• Yet their follow-up, ‘Time Machine’, also dented the U.S. charts, while a later Danté solo 45, ‘(You’re My) Miss America’, was successfully covered by The Beach Boys.
• After The Evergreens split, lead singer Donald “Danté” Drowty cut several further 45s, a couple backed by The Rivingtons, enjoying some regional successes.
• This compilation reissues everything that Danté recorded between 1960-62, with and without The Evergreens (it includes their collectable, vastly underrated LP), plus - as bonus tracks - three singles that he and his Evergreens sang on, in an earlier incarnation.
• Much of this repertoire is damnably difficult to find elsewhere on CD, while the bonus tracks are highly sought after by Doo W*p aficionados.

• Revered by fans of 1950s West Coast rock ‘n’ roll and R&B and a huge influence on many of their contemporaries, Don Harris and Dewey Terry were unquestionably among the most exciting acts of their era, producing some of the most feral black American music of its time and indeed, of any time thereafter!
• Their discography boasts many all-time classic songs, all of them self-written. They cut the original versions of British beat group favourite ‘Farmer John’, ‘Justine’ and ‘KoKo Joe’ (both revived by the Righteous Brothers, who recorded several of D&D’s songs in their early years) and ‘Leaving It All Up To You’ – a hit in 1963 for Dale & Grace and again in 1975 for Donnie & Marie Osmond. You can hear their originals and much more besides in this new Jasmine compilation, which covers their 1950s and early 60s recordings in depth.
• Unbelievably, D&D never had a national hit of their own at any time, although their records sold well regionally and particularly so on the West Coast where they were based and where their live wire stage act pulled crowds every time they played.
• You can hear exactly why in the material featured in this set, which does not flag from first to last and which demonstrates why Don and Dewey are still so revered as an act more than 50 years after they cut their last records as a duo, before going on to work with the likes of Frank Zappa, Johnny Otis and John Mayall in the 70s.

• Of all the husband/wife duos in Country Music, WILMA LEE & STONEY COOPER enjoyed one of the more extraordinary careers, being operative from the late 30s until Stoney’s death, in 1977.
• Remarkably, throughout this period they continued to perform in a traditional, old school Appalachian Mountain music style, ignoring all contemporary trends, registering their biggest hits in the late 50s, directly in the teeth of Rock & Roll, Rockabilly and the newly-emergent Nashville Countrypolitan sound.

• JOHNNY OTIS - aka “The Godfather Of R&B” - was one of those men to whom the phrase “A Living Legend” was applied throughout his career.
• As a singer, musician, composer, bandleader, record producer and talent scout he went on to become a seminal influence on both R&B and Rock & Roll.
• This compilation is the second in a two CD mini-series which anthologises virtually everything that he recorded between 1952-57 for Don Robey’s famed Peacock and Duke labels, in Houston, Texas.
• In addition to Otis’ own releases it features sides on which he and his band backed artists like Lovey Lewis, Johnny Ace (including ‘Pledging My Love’), The Sultans, Junior Ryder, Joe “Mr Google Eyes” August, Marie Adams and Big Mama Thornton, and which Otis, in turn, produced.
