In the courtyard, a luminous blue figure breathes — eyes closed, dreaming through the noise of catastrophe, murmuring resistance and renewal. The Spell - conjured by artist - rests on a stepped plinth, part sculpture, part gathering place, part portal. Listen closely: composer Maxwell Sterling’s soundscape hums from within.
Somewhere else — and everywhere — The Dream radio is transmitting. 24/7. Guests: Yanis Varoufakis, Brian Eno, Hannah Black, The Palestinian Sound Archive. New works by Cécile B Evans, Moor Mother, Cecilia Vicuña. No replays — tune in or miss it forever.
At 1pm and 3pm the fountains fall silent, and the spell comes into full focus.
Somerset House → until 14th September.

Grounded in the unsettled landscape of Thatcher’s Britain, Menelik Shabazz’s Burning an Illusion follows 22 year old office worker Pat Williams as her life takes a turn following her boyfriend’s involvement in a violent police altercation. The second British feature film by a black director, Burning An Illusion explores how everyday experience of love and identity are shaped – and often warped – by systemic prejudice. The film is available to stream along with the rest of the recent Now Showing season: True Brit, on TANK.tv

Francis Bacon’s smeary, nightmarish paintings come to life in John Maybury’s 1998 biopic, Love Is the Devil. A terrifying insight into the sadomasochistic relationship between Bacon and George Dyer, both his lover and muse. As Dyer submits himself to the role of the vessel, his very suffering feeds the artist’s success. Visit TANK.tv to experience the full catalogue of Now Showing’s Season 14: True Brit.
