Remembering David Hockney (1937–2026). One of the most beloved British artists of his generation, Hockney captured modern life like no one else — the sun-drenched LA swimming pools, the Yorkshire landscapes, and, in his later years, paintings made on an iPad. His work hangs in the Met, MoMA, the Tate, and the Centre Pompidou, and his 2017 Tate Britain retrospective was the most-visited show in that gallery's history.

His 1972 painting "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)" sold for $90 million in 2018 — then a record for any living artist. He had first sold that very painting for $20,000.

From Art Market this week… the new Obama Presidential Center is also one of the biggest public art projects in the country. 🎨

Opening this month in Chicago, the $850 million campus — with a museum tower nicknamed the "Obamalisk" — features more than 28 commissioned works from some of America's most celebrated artists: a three-story Mark Bradford painting of Chicago, Jack Pierson's "HOPE" in marquee letters, Idris Khan's text piece drawn from Obama's 2015 Selma speech, a tapestry by Nick Cave and Marie Watt, plus works by Carrie Mae Weems, Jenny Holzer, Theaster Gates, Lorna Simpson and Maya Lin.

From Art Market this week… two Jackson Po***cks, two very different stories. 🎨

One Po***ck just set the season's high, selling for $181 million in New York. Another — "Number 19, 1951," owned by Pace Gallery founder Arne Glimcher — was quietly shopped by Sotheby's in a private sale at around $50 million… and didn't find a buyer.

The split says a lot: the very top still pays record prices for trophies, but everything just below is getting harder to move. And it's personal — as Glimcher's Po***ck stalls, his son Marc, who runs Pace, is cutting around 50 artists and has called the mega-gallery model "unfixable."

From Open Bid this morning... The Porsche 911 is staying analog. 🏁

Porsche CEO Michael Leiters just confirmed: no fully electric 911. The icon keeps its combustion engine (with a hybrid option), even as Porsche keeps investing in EVs elsewhere.

The context? EV demand has cooled — the electric Taycan has sold below expectations, and the electric 718 is delayed. Sometimes the market tells you to keep what works.

A 1929 yellow-gold Patek Philippe with a Tiffany dial, once owned by Paul Starrett — who, with his twin brother, put up the Empire State Building (plus the Flatiron, the Plaza, and old Penn Station).

It hits the block at Phillips in New York this Saturday, Lot 27 — estimate just $15,000–$30,000. Provenance like this rarely comes that affordable.
