Remembering David Hockney (1937β2026). One of the most beloved British artists of his generation, Hockney captured modern life like no one else β the sun-drenched LA swimming pools, the Yorkshire landscapes, and, in his later years, paintings made on an iPad. His work hangs in the Met, MoMA, the Tate, and the Centre Pompidou, and his 2017 Tate Britain retrospective was the most-visited show in that gallery's history.
His 1972 painting "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)" sold for $90 million in 2018 β then a record for any living artist. He had first sold that very painting for $20,000.
