🗣 “I had a life-changing experience.”

It really only takes one thing: one song, one album, one gig. Every artist has a story about their own, as Paul McCartney recalls hearing Elvis Presley for the first time, or Patti Smith remembers seeing Jim Morrison live.

Every artist has their first musical loves who proved to be immeasurably influential in the years to come, not only prompting them to get into music, but still shaping their perspective on it decades down the line.

In the late 1990s, David Bowie bemoaned the grand mausoleum of music open to Bob Dylan to pluck his setlists from.

Bob Dylan was there at the birth of pop culture, and we can all be glad that he was able to use his Promethean force to wrestle it towards an entirely new and interesting direction.

Much like one of Dylan’s favourite writers, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, once said about the explosion of Russian literature, “we all came out of Gogol’s overcoat”, it would seem that every reverential songwriter after 1962 crawled out from Dylan’s cambric shirt.

Now, over half a century later, he is still producing masterpieces. Below we have jostled and butted heads in a bid to bring you 25 of his very greatest, despite the fact that the list could be doubled, triple and quadruple without much degradation to the quality of songs at hand.

There was one thing that Frank Zappa put before everything else when discussing creativity and music, which was authenticity. 🎤🎶

It didn’t matter whether an artist was making the most complex and outrageous music in the world, or whether they were producing something straightforward and simple, so long as they were passionate about what they were doing, and that passion was evident within their sound, Zappa was a fan.

The moment an artist seemed to put their image or their marketing before their art, he became disinterested.

There isn’t any band in the world that hasn’t had their fair share of drama behind the scenes. 💥🎶

From Yoko Ono getting in the way in the studios to the creative differences driving a wedge between band members, sometimes it’s just natural for some of our favourite musicians to just go their separate ways to let them express themselves the way they want to. Then again, some of the reasons why people like Richard Wright were let go were a little bit much.

As much as some people might be absolutely insufferable to work with day in and day out, the reasons that the fans were given as to why some of these people left the fold are some of the most petty defences that anyone has given in rock music.

AC/DC and Oasis have received the very same complaint after playing riotous shows at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium this summer.

This is not the first time Oasis have been in trouble with the Edinburgh council. Liam Gallagher has previously called them “a bunch of snakes” following a report that suggested Oasis fans would cause bother to the city as they would be “rowdy” and “intoxicated.”
