When Blondie emerged in the latter half of the 1970s, they were rightly hailed as innovators ushering in a new era of alternative music. 🎤🎶

While they were surrounded by several other innovative groups performing in iconic New York clubs such as CBGB and Max’s Kansas City, what Blondie offered wasn’t quite snotty or edgy enough to be punk and still only felt adjacent to the art rock bands in their extended circle. That said, it was fresh, exciting, and completely new.

Originality, in its truest form, is a near impossibility in the modern age of art and music.

The cultural landscape consists of countless artists building upon what has come before, adding their unique and modern touch to a preexisting sound, image, or story.

While this practice is often wrongly confused with plagiarism, it has led to the creation of some of music’s most beloved efforts, including Led Zeppelin’s hard rock masterpiece, ‘Black Dog’. 🎤✨

🗣 “The roughest diamond in the mine.”

As a genre born from a convergence of jazz, blues, gospel, boogie-woogie, country, and folk, rock and roll spread its brackets rather wide. Despite such a broad and ill-defined banner, Tom Waits has somehow managed to spread his wings even wider as one of the most versatile singer-songwriters in the history of recorded music. 🙌🎶

From the folk balladry of ‘I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You’ to the avant blues masterpiece ’16 Shells From a Thirty-Ought-Six’, the only constant in Waits’ catalogue is top-flight lyricism.

🗣 “He was the poet.”

The main reason 1960s Bob Dylan was something of a god was because he inspired everyone and anyone to pick up a guitar. Not all of those turned out to be successful sonic protégés, of course, but his grasp on the musical landscape was such that the whole world was eating out of the palm of his hand. 🎤🎶
