WATCH | Malaysia PM Ibrahim assures Thailand, Cambodia conflict resolved after agreed ceasefire

JAKARTA - “We cannot afford an ASEAN as weak, fragmented, and in conflict with one another. Our national fortune rise and fall with the region. ASEAN must continue to harness its convening power through dialogue and diplomacy,” Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said after his successful mediation, as an ASEAN chair, of the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, whose leaders have agreed to a ceasefire.

Ibrahim assured that the reported conflict after the agreed ceasefire has been resolved by Thailand and Cambodia's leaders as well as their respective commanders on the ground.

As Chair of the ASEAN, Ibrahim successfully mediated between Thailand and Cambodia's long-standing border dispute which recently led to a 5-day battle that displaced over 300,000 people and left at least 38 dead.

He also acknowledged the role of US President Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping.

Ibrahim delivered his policy speech as this year's ASEAN Chair at the Nusantara Hall of the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta.

The event was attended by ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn, members of the ASEAN Secretariat and the ASEAN member-states, as well as the members of the diplomatic corps.

In his homily, Cardinal Tagle said that this Jubilee event is an invitation to “scrutinize the intention that fuels the influence the contemporary world wants to effect.” “The change we wish to see in the world is directly connected to how we choose to influence others and our motivations behind it,” the Cardinal said.

“Some use false advertising to sway people; others use blackmail or bribery. Still others resort to war, bombings, forced starvation as a means of influencing those around them,” he added.

Cardinal Tagle said the Gospel message encourages us to allow Jesus to influence us with His love, through which we can influence others for good.

At the end of the Mass, Pope Leo XIV addressed the young people present in the Basilica in three languages: Spanish, English, and Italian. In his message, he began by once again calling for an end to violence, emphasizing “how much we need peace in these times torn apart by enmity and war”.

UPDATE | Senado hinimok ang SC na payagang umusad ang Impeachment ni VP Sara Duterte

MANILA — Nananawagan sa Supreme Court (SC) ang ilang myembro ng Senado na baliktarin ang ruling nito na ipatigil ang impeachment trial ni Vice President Sara Duterte.

Pinigilan iyon ng Kataas-taasang Hukuman dahil sa technicality.

Sa isang joint statement, hiniling nina Senator Francis Pangilinan, Risa Hontiveros at Bam Aquino sa SC na “reconsider and apply two principles it has long upheld", na iginigiit ang “the Fairness Principle -- that retroactive application of new legal interpretations should not harm thosne who relied in good faith on old ones”, at “the Doctrine of Operative Facts -- that actions already taken under a prior, valid interpretation should be recognized as legally effective.”

“We respectfully disagree with the Supreme Court's ruling that halted the Senate's constitutional duty to try the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte,” saad nila.

“Congress, acting in good faith and following prevailing jurisprudence, followed the law in initiating and transmitting the complaint. To retroactively apply a new definition of what it means to 'initiate' an impeachment case — after the fact — can be likened to changing the rules in the middle of the game. It is unfair,” ayon sa mga mambabatas.

Giit nina Senador Pangilinan, Hontiveros at Aquino, "The powers of the Court, the House of Representatives, and the Senate must all be given proper and balanced effect. We did not swear an oath only to protect positions by way of technicalities. We swore to protect the Constitution -- and the right of every Filipino to demand truth and justice."

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - The Filipino community here is calling for help to find a 75-year old Filipina Lourdes Villanueva Morin, who has been missing for more than two days now.

In a Facebook post, Malcolm Conlan, one of the good friends of Morin’s son-in-law, said Morin is in Las Vegas to visit her relatives from the Philippines.

“She was due to go to church Sunday, St. Viador Church which is on Eastern and Flamingo,” Conlan said.

According to Conlan, Morin was last seen wearing a white blouse and black pants.

Conlan said US authorities have already been contacted and informed to help search and know the whereabouts of Morin.

“If you have a family in Las Vegas or are based there, particularly in the Filipino community, please help us find her as her family are very worried about her. Please help to share. Salamat po,” Conlan said.

About 146 countries will be represented throughout the week, with 78% coming from European countries, according to the Vatican News.

The other 22% will travel from across the globe, including some young people from countries facing conflict such as Iraq, South Sudan, and Lebanon.

"Essentially, this moment of celebration, this moment of joy, is also meant to offer them the embrace of all the young people from around the world - a gesture that symbolizes an authentic moment of peace and a step toward building peace in the world," Archbishop Fisichella said.

The Jubilee of Influencers and the Jubilee of Youth are on the agenda from July 28 – August 3 for the events in the Jubilee Year of Hope.
