When I see my nan turn away from her food, my heart breaks. She looks at the plate for a moment, then slowly shakes her head. Her lips quiver, her eyes filled with the quiet pain she tries to hide. I force a smile, even as my chest tightens. “Please, Nan,” I whisper, “just a few bites.” But she only sighs and turns away. I know it’s not that she doesn’t want to eat—it’s that her body is too weak now, her illness stealing the strength she once had in abundance. Tears slip down my cheeks before I can stop them. I remember the days she would feed me with her own hands, always fussing that I hadn’t eaten enough. Now it’s me begging her to take a bite. Watching her fade, little by little, hurts more than I can say. I just want her to stay strong a little longer—to eat a little, for me.

A lot of people ask what my Nan gets up to when she’s on her own…. Each day is very different of course. Today has been a pretty positive day for us, but a very distant dementia day! Nan has been very lost in her dementia world recently, as you can see here. She also gets heavily fixated on things that she loves… and that today, was ICECREAM! Her reaction at the end was worth it all!!!! 🥹🥹🥹 •••••
