Grave Dispute in Bulawayo

Bulawayo City Council has approved plans to exhume a grave at West Park Cemetery following a dispute between two families over the ownership of the burial site.

The row centres around Grave 19 in the Old Anglican Section of the cemetery, where both the Saunyama and Somkence families claim their loved one was buried.

According to the latest Health, Housing and Education Committee report, Florence Saunyama, who died in 2003 aged 69, was laid to rest in the disputed grave.

However, a year later, in 2004, Caleb Somkence was also buried in the same section — although records do not show the exact location of his grave.

“The section and fees books showed that the late Caleb Somkence (male, 73) was buried on the 10th of November 2004 in the old Anglican general section. However, the grave number was not captured in both books. The family of Caleb Somkence had since erected a tombstone on grave number 19 Anglican general section since they believed that their deceased person was buried there,” the report read.

“A meeting was held on the 8th of January 2025 with family representatives of the deceased persons believed to be buried in grave 19 Old Anglican Section, West Park Cemetery. The meeting recommended that to ascertain whose remains were in grave 19 there was a need for exhumation so that both families find closure on the matter. There would be a need to exhume the nearby graves as well to determine if the remains belonged to one of the two families.”

The council has since authorised its health department to cover the costs of the exhumation exercise, which may include checking nearby unmarked graves.

CHIEF MPHINI FINGERED — VILLAGERS CRY FOUL IN LAND SCANDAL

Bulilima, Plumtree — Chief Mphini has been fingered in a land scandal, where he is accused by furious villagers of flogging off their grazing land like it was a Black Friday sale.

The villagers of Ward 21, who’ve peacefully co-existed on that land for the past 74 years — longer than most marriages — are now up in arms. Their beloved grazing pastures have allegedly been chopped up and sold by Chief Mphini to "buyers" who’ve already started building houses, shops, and possibly dreams — all without the villagers' consent.

In a sternly worded letter to the District Development Coordinator Mr Onesimo Zvogara, and copied to Bulilima RDC Chair Councillor Lands Ndebele (yes, Lands is his name ironically), the villagers expressed their fury and disbelief.

“We are very angry and cross,” reads the villagers' letter — and when rural folk use both “angry” and “cross” in the same sentence, you know someone’s ancestors are also rolling in their kraals.

They described how Mr Zvogara met with them last month, and while the meeting was polite, it was also revealing: Chief Mphini had apparently cashed in the cows’ inheritance in broad daylight, leaving the villagers to wonder if he mistook “being a Chief” for “being a Real Estate Agent.”

The most shocking part? Despite the scandal hanging in the air like the scent of betrayal at a family gathering, construction is still going on. Shops and houses are sprouting up like mushrooms, and the officials — instead of acting swiftly — seem to be moving at the speed of a tortoise on vacation.

The villagers demand that justice be served — ideally with a side of land restitution — and that the matter be treated with the urgency it deserves. After all, one does not simply yeet 74 years of communal grazing land without consequences.

The people of Ward 21 are watching. The cows are watching. Even the ancestors are probably peeping through the mountains, wondering: “What in the grazing hell is going on down there?”
