A small but brilliant jewel in the Balkans along the Adriatic Sea, Montenegro has it all in topography for tourism, including a long coastline, the planet’s southernmost fjord (Boka Bay), Europe’s cleanest river (Tara), the largest lake in the Balkans (Skadar), five national parks, endless mountains and one of the last rainforests on the continent (Biogradska Gora). No wonder Montenegro became the first ecological state in the world in 1991.

Time can be measured by how quickly the Cannes Yachting Festival comes around each year, then it feels like the hour hand is moving rather rapidly. The largest in-water boat show in Europe takes place in the famous French Riviera town in September and attracts the most glamorous boats, as well as the elite of the luxury yachting world.

This year the show is expected to feature as many as 700 boats measuring anything from 5m to 50m. Many will be existing vessels, but among the 600 exhibitors at the event we could see as many as 160 yacht debuts or new products. It’s big business for the industry and includes one of the most exclusive preowned “showrooms” in the world, as 50 yachts measuring longer than 24m are presented in the Sailing and Yacht Brokerage area.

That’s all well and good if you happen to be in Cannes and are planning to attend, but what you really like to see here are the glitzy new yachts, so here’s what we know.

Sharing in the Monaco yachting dream
Co-sharing is proving a popular option for those who want the yachting lifestyle without the commitment

Before we get to the really glitzy stuff, Cannes is also about smaller boats and yachts, and there will be lots of new trends on show. Cantieri Magazzu will show the latest in its walkaround range, the MX-16 and M-16, both measuring 16.7m. They might be small, but they have lots of exterior space and below deck are two cabins with double beds, two bathrooms and a dinette. Even smaller is the new Sacs Tecnorib Strider 13. It is every bit the sporty rib boat, but it also features luxurious finishes and a cabin below deck with a bathroom and separate shower. Don’t ask me how they fitted that in, but we are assured it’s there.

If these all seem too small then Pearl Yachts will debut its new 25m Pearl 82. The renowned yacht builder has worked extensively on design and layout to create a raised pilothouse that provides more interior space. It also allows for a larger garage with room for a tender, jet skis and other water toys.

Known for its enviable yacht racing events, Antigua & Barbuda offer a diverse range of regattas. It's the only island which has not just one but six incredible international racing events including the RORC Caribbean 600, the RORC Nelson Series, The Superyacht Challenge Antigua, Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, Antigua Sailing Week and in 2025 the Oyster Rally along with a plethora of one day and weekend fun events.

In addition to the thrilling yacht racing events, Antigua also hosts the Antigua Charter Yacht Show, two Fishing tournaments and the World's Toughest Row, making it a hub for international marine events. In addition, it is a destination for rallies such as the Salty Dawg Rally which brings around 100 boats directly from the US to Antigua's shores in November.

The ABYMA is proud to announce the launch of its highly anticipated 2024-2025 Yachting and Marine Events Calendar.

The shipwreck of a luxury yacht moored off the coast of Sicily is the latest sign that the Mediterranean is becoming a more dangerous sea to sail in, climate experts and skippers say.

One man died and six people are still missing, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, after the Bayesian, a 56-metre-long (184-ft) sailboat, was hit by a ferocious storm on Monday, sinking in a matter of minutes.

Climatologists say global warming is making such violent and unexpected tempests more frequent in a sea used as a summer playground for millions of tourists, including a wealthy few sailing its waters on superyachts.

Hordes of avid sailing fans will converge on Barcelona in the late summer of this year to witness the 37th edition of the America’s Cup – yachting’s oldest and most prestigious sporting competition, which is being staged in Europe for the first time in 14 years.

Tens of thousands of spectators from across continental Europe and the rest of the world are expected to boost the Catalan capital's tourist numbers for the two month regatta which will see professional teams from New Zealand, Great Britain, Italy, the United States, Switzerland, and France. Made up of the world’s best professional sailors, go head to head in multi-million-dollar custom-built ultra-high-performance flying yachts.

British sailing writer Justin Chisholm has reported on the last five cycles of the America’s Cup, but was given a unique ringside seat to witness the build up to this latest edition.

On a warm June morning, a 286-foot private research vessel set off from the green and rocky sea cliffs of the Azores, a chain of islands jutting upward from the North Atlantic Ocean, about a thousand miles west of mainland Portugal. The gleaming white OceanXplorer, rising high above the water, resembled a modified superyacht, with a helicopter pad on the bow and a pair of yellow submersibles near the stern. Below the surface, the ship’s hull featured a high-resolution sonar array to map underwater terrain.

The OceanXplorer had embarked on a unique mission: to tag and retrieve data from bluntnose sixgill sharks in their natural environment, an area so deep that much of their behavior remains a mystery. These prehistoric predators, whose ancestors first appeared 200 million years ago, can grow up to 18 feet long. They’re concealed within the ocean’s mesopelagic layer, or “twilight zone”—a frigid region reaching 3,000 feet down that’s nearly devoid of light. Still, each evening, the slow-moving yet buoyant sixgills here make a three-hour journey up to shallower waters to feed at a known hunting spot on the ledge of an undersea mountain near the Azores.

What lurks beneath the waves? Cutting edge robots, ships, and submersibles are helping a new generation of explorers understand the most mysterious habitat on Earth.

For many, working on board a yacht is a professional dream come true. However, the realities of life may mean that a shoreside role becomes more and more appealing as you grow into your career.

Thanks to the unique qualifications and knowledge that comes from being crew, staying within the yachting industry and becoming a broker is a natural transition for many professionals. But what does this look like in practice and how do you transfer the skills into this new environment?

In collaboration with YATCO, we spoke to Giverny Jade, head of charter at Mortlock Yachts, Igor Abrate, a yacht broker with Yacht & Villa, and Brendan Roney, managing partner at BR Marine Group. Jade, Abrate, and Roney all moved from life on board to shoreside roles as sales and charter brokers.

The unique qualifications and knowledge that comes from being crew often translate to becoming a broker, but what do they look like?

Considering the global initiatives to become nature positive by 2030 [1] and the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals [2], the concepts of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) [3] and Marine Net Gain (MNG) are gaining traction [4,5]. Here we explore the potential of marine restoration in contributing to MNG, carbon sequestration, and port decarbonisation, addressing the critical need for effective marine restoration strategies in the face of climate change, marine pollution, and overfishing [6,7,8]. We find that the positive impacts of restoration and reviving marine habitats are wide-ranging, from enhancing biodiversity and supporting sustainable fisheries [9], improving water quality [10], to contributing to carbon offsetting efforts [11]. All helping to combat climate change, mitigate its effects on our planet, and secure a more sustainable future.
