The SOAS Spirit

The SOAS Spirit The SOAS Spirit is SOAS’s official independent student newspaper, with a history dating back to 1935.

The paper is published monthly during term and is compiled purely by students. Sections include News, Features, Opinion, Culture and Societies and Sport. James Ethan Byrne ([email protected]) is the SOAS Spirit Senior Editor, and he wants to expand and innovate the newspaper both online, on social media and in print, so that it truly reflects the diversity of views and experiences within the SOAS

community. There are a variety of roles available, ranging from photographers and illustrators, to writers, editors and social media coordinators. 📰 A new report, 'Refugee Housing and Homelessness: Scoping Local Authority Approaches', has been published by SOAS researchers Dr Anna Lindley and Dr Charlotte Sanders; examining how local authorities in London are responding to refugee homelessness.

The report presents insights on the difficult transition between asylum accommodation and mainstream housing; from the rapid 28-day eviction timescale for most single adults once they have been granted refugee status, to variations in support provided by local authorities to single people at risk of homelessness.

Dr Lindley said: "The report shines a light on the need for robust and holistic strategies to help people who are recognised as refugees to get on with their lives in the UK. It offers examples of constructive approaches among local authorities and other organisations to help address the disproportionate barriers which people with newly granted refugee status face in trying to access accommodation.”

Dr Lindley and Dr Sanders carried out various interviews with London local authorities, people granted refugee status and support organisations, to scope the situation and current responses.

Looking ahead to the new year, we are delighted to share two events accompanying our upcoming exhibition Mughal Banaras. Make a note in your diary now 📖✨

On Tuesday 14th January, join us for a fascinating conversation on collaborative methods in project work. The exhibition’s two curators, one an architect and the other an academic, will reflect on how they came together to document the Mughal heritage of Banaras through photography and archival research. This talk will be of particular interest to anyone working across disciplines in academia, the arts, and cultural practice 🤝📸 https://ow.ly/cV0N50XKNRf

On Tuesday 21st January, we look forward to a rich evening talk exploring the history of Jahandar Shah and the later Mughals in Banaras. Expect new research and remarkable artworks in this talk by Professor Malavika Kasturi of the University of Toronto. This promises to be a stimulating and memorable event, and not one to miss 🎨📚 https://ow.ly/yE3c50XKNRg
