SEnine Magazine

SEnine Magazine This is the official page for SEnine Magazine.

SEnine is more than a monthly, community magazine, it is a voice for the London SE9 community, supported by the local community. The content is topical, well-written, locally-focused and interesting, meaning that our loyal readers keep hold of their copy for longer and often pass it on to someone else to read. Every month, we distribute 11,500 copies around Eltham, New Eltham, Avery Hill and Mottingham, and we estimate our readership to be around 30,000 people.

Replacement trees on Eltham Green, let's hope they water them properly this time. A mixture of Prunus 'Sunset Boulevard' and Liquidamber.

They replace a row of London Planes which were planted three years ago and have been dead for the last two.

August’s SEnine, issue 225, is available now, both in print form, and on our website www.senine.co.uk
The cover is of a spectacular Rose Chafer beetle, taken by nature-lover Karen Martin.
The main news story hears from local SE9 residents, challenging planning decisions for HMOs in their streets. Other news looks at a u-turn from Southeastern on their much-criticised timetable reforms from a few years back.

Eltham's historic tram shelters have been given some protection before their marketing for sale in the autumn.

The shelters have been granted 'local listing' which means the council must consider their special local interest when assessing planning applications and can help prevent inappropriate development.

Possible uses include being converted for use as small shop units. The council say they would cost at least £500,000 and the would rather see what the private sector can come up with.

The wooden shelters were built in two stages, the one nearest the crossroads in 1912, two years after the tram service to Woolwich started, and the other two in 1922 to serve the extra passengers created by the extended service down Eltham Hill to Lewisham. They are believed to be one of the few remaining tram shelters in the capital and were retained in use after the tram service stopped in 1952.

Eltham's former URC buildings in Court Road are up for sale for £3m. Viewings are taking place this month and next with bids due in by mid-August.

Caxton's sale blurb says that planning status of the church is for 'places of worship, museums, schools, public libraries and public halls. Other uses are likely to require planning
permission.'

The sale includes the former premises manager's flat, and function and meeting rooms at the rear with 16 parking spaces.

Sewage has overflowed into two local streams from Thames Water overflows during this morning's downpour.

An overflow pipe was spilling into the Wyncham stream from near the A20 at New Eltham. The stream meets the river Shuttle at Blackfen before flowing past Hall Place to the Cray and then the Thames.

The overflows were more than three hours in the early morning and then again for more than half an hour just after mid-day.

SEnine magazine has taken samples from near the outflow for analysis as neither the Environment Agency nor Thames Water say they have been monitoring the effect on the stream during recent spills.

The second overflow affects the river Quaggy, which flows through Sutcliffe Park; the outflow pipe is at Crofton Road north of Orpington.

Details of the spills can be seen at www.sewagemap.co.uk, a real-time website set up by a group of campaigners at a range of academic institutions.

A major facelift for Eltham Library and the Eltham Centre is being planned by Greenwich Council.

It will address the problems of peeling paint and exposed brickwork on the High Street facade and the staining of the rendered surfaces to the Eltham Centre on Archery Road.

Substantial works are also needed to the skylights and roof tiles.

The works complement the £10m planned to install energy efficient heating for the Eltham Centre and repairs which will be required to it to be installed, to the 2007 building.

The Grade 11 listed building was funded by American Scot Andree Carnegie in 1906 and is in the Edwardian baroque style with oriel windows and tile-hung gables flanked by urns.

Live music, children's activities, barbeque and video showing its history will be happening at Avery Hill's Winter Garden on Saturday from 12 - 4pm.

The event is a celebration of the Winter Garden's opening after refurbishment works by the University of Greenwich which owns and manages the site. It hopes to develop its attraction in advance if any full-scale restoration works, which are currently delayed until a final decision to cancel the secondary school project is confirmed.

Music line-up: 12.30 - 1.30 pm Scott Pettipas (acoustic guitar)
1.30 - 2.30pm: Woodland Sting Quartet
2.30 - 4pm: Julie Hodgskin

The event is supported by the Friends of the Winter Garden and Friends of Avery Hill Park, who have renovated the adjacent terrace and rose gardens.

An original granite cattle trough which had stood in Bexley Road for 120 years appears to have been stolen.

The trough, at Gravel Pit Lane outside the former environmental centre, was donated by Sir Spencer Maryon-Wilson in 1905 in conjunction with the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association for horses, cattle and dogs.

Initially it was hoped that it had been taken into safekeeping while works are on-going to build a SEND facility at the former centre but RBG say they and their contractors have no knowledge about its disappearance.

There are also troughs still remaining at Clare Corner on Footscray Road and in Eltham Road opposite the Yorkshire Grey McDonalds.

The only remaining drinking fountain in SE9 in the wall of St John's church at the Eltham High Street crossroads.

Sir Spencer donated many cattle troughs, including one outside the family former ancestral home - from 1767 - 1923 - in Charlton in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII.
