Jack Laurenson is a journalist and photographer from London who is usually abroad chasing a story or an idea. He is also an aspiring screenwriter and filmmaker with a number of projects in the very early stages of development. Jack is passionate about visual and written storytelling and has lived in five different countries (the U

K, Cambodia, Vietnam, Ukraine, Thailand) and worked in dozens more as a writer and photojournalist. His assignments, projects and adventures have taken him to India, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Mongolia, Russia, Israel, Palestine and most of Europe. He is currently based between London and Kyiv, Ukraine, where he is focused on long-term writing projects related to war, occupation and resistance. As a writer and photojournalist, his work has been published in a variety of outlets around the world and Jack has also been a staff writer and editor for newspapers and magazines in a handful of different countries. He is a photojournalism graduate (class of 2012) of the University of the Arts London, where he also studied journalism at the London College of Communication, which is part of UAL. In 2015 he lived and worked as a journalist in Cambodia, before moving to Hanoi ,Vietnam, in 2016 where he worked for UNESCO and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, or IUCN, tasked with training country offices and IUCN members in storytelling skills. He ran multiple projects and workshops across the region, particularly in Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. In January 2017, he traveled from Vietnam to Ukraine by train, journeying through China, Mongolia and across Russia to get to Kyiv. Since then, his personal and professional time and efforts have been divided between projects in his home city of London and his adopted home of Kyiv.

About Jack Laurenson:

Jack Laurenson is a British journalist, photographer, communications specialist and multi award-winning magazine editor from London. He has lived in five different countries and worked in many more as a roaming foreign correspondent. A keen traveller – with motorcycle or train his preferred method of getting about – his assignments have taken him to places like India, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Mongolia, Russia, Israel and Palestine. He’s currently based in Kyiv, Ukraine.

His work has been published in a variety of outlets around the world, including: Geographical, GEO, Asian Geographic, the Guardian, the Telegraph, Le Devoir, the Financial Times, the International Business Times, the New Internationalist, Huffington Post and the Southeast Asia Globe.

Clients and partners in the NGO and civil society sectors have included the United Nations, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, USAID, the Bhopal Medical Appeal, Greenpeace, Earth Rights International and the Crisis Response Journal.

Recent major projects:

In early 2011, shortly after completing his journalism and photojournalism undergraduate studies at the London College of Communication, Laurenson was hired as executive editor of an iPad magazine dedicated to reportage and investigative journalism. Re-launching the the publication as Inquire, he grew it to become a multi award-winning digital magazine. He left the project in late 2013.

Through 2015, after extensive travels through the wider Indo-burma region, he settled in Cambodia where he was hired as a staff correspondent for one of Southeast Asia’s largest English-language newspapers, the Khmer Times. To supply articles for his weekly center-fold in the newspaper, Laurenson covered organised crime, corruption, business, conservation, development and current affairs.

In early 2016, he moved to Hanoi in Vietnam to become a regional communications manager for the International Union for Conservation of Nature, or IUCN. Tasked with helping country offices and partner members in the region improve their communications output, Laurenson ran projects and workshops across the region, particularly in Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

In January 2017, he traveled from Vietnam to Ukraine by train, journeying through China, Mongolia and across Russia to get to Kyiv. Upon arrival, he joined the Ukraine Business Journal, or UBJ, as a senior business reporter.

Since the spring of 2018, Laurenson has been managing editor of the UBJ. Through launching new supplements and reports, building new publishing partnerships and generally improving the output of content he has sought to establish the UBJ as a serious, high-quality business journal for Ukraine and the wider region.
