Developers are embracing AI agents for software development

Developers worldwide are embracing AI agents in software development with overwhelming enthusiasm, according to research from Salesforce.

According to Salesforce’s latest State of IT survey, an impressive 96% of developers globally believe AI agents will positively reshape the developer experience, with more than nine in ten excited about AI’s impact on their careers.

Closer to home, the figures remain equally compelling, with over four in five developers in the UK and Ireland (UKI) predicting these AI agents will become indispensable tools in app development, rivaling traditional software resources.

AI agents catalyse a new era of software development
Far from the narrative of AI scepticism often attributed to developers, Salesforce’s research reveals high levels of optimism around integrating AI agents.

Agentic AI has the potential to free developers from mundane tasks such as code debugging and data cleaning, enabling them to redirect their skills toward more meaningful and strategic projects.

Alice Steinglass, EVP & GM of Platform, Integration, and Automation at Salesforce, explained: “AI agents are revolutionising the way developers work, making software development faster, more efficient, and more enjoyable.

“By automating tedious tasks like data cleaning, integration, and basic testing, AI agents free developers to shift their focus from manual coding to high-value problem-solving, architecture, and strategic decision-making.”

Microsoft Copilot continues to expose private GitHub repositories

In August 2024, a LinkedIn post caused alarm by alleging that ChatGPT (and, by association, Microsoft Copilot) was capable of accessing data from private GitHub repositories. Such a claim, if true, could have significant ramifications for data security and privacy.

Eager to uncover the truth behind the claim, the research team at Lasso, a digital security company, undertook a thorough investigation. What they found was a digital conundrum involving cached, publicly exposed, and now private data—a phenomenon they have since dubbed “Zombie Data.”

Beginning the investigation
The investigation began with the LinkedIn post, which hinted at ChatGPT potentially leveraging data from a GitHub repository that had been made private. Lasso’s team conducted a quick search, discovering that the repository in question was indexed by Bing during its public phase but was no longer accessible directly on GitHub.

When querying ChatGPT about the repository, it became apparent that the AI tool wasn’t pulling data from direct access but from hypothetical or indexed content. As Lasso noted, ChatGPT relies on Bing for web indexing when crafting replies, which provided an explanation: repositories that were once public but later made private had their indexed data captured by Bing’s cache.

However, this discovery prompted two pressing questions: What happens to the data within repositories that were turned private or deleted? And how many other repositories might be affected by this phenomenon?

Google deploys Data Science Agent to Colab users
Google is empowering data scientists and researchers with the deployment of the Data Science Agent to its Colab platform.

For those unfamiliar, Google Colab is a free, cloud-hosted Jupyter Notebook environment allowing users to write and execute Python code within their browser. By providing free access to Google Cloud GPUs and TPUs, Colab has become a vital tool for running AI models and enhancing project collaboration with minimal infrastructure setup.

Google has now announced the broader availability of its AI-powered Data Science Agent. Set to transform workflows in universities, research labs, and beyond, the tool automates some of the most repetitive and time-consuming elements of data analysis.

In December, Google unveiled the Data Science Agent in Colab to a group of trusted testers. This assistant – built using Google’s Gemini AI model – simplifies tasks such as importing libraries, loading datasets, and even writing boilerplate code.

“Trusted testers are enthusiastic about the Data Science Agent, reporting they are able to streamline workflows and uncover insights faster than ever before,” said the Google team.

This week, the AI-based tool is being rolled out to all Colab users aged 18 and older in selected countries and languages, providing a new arsenal for academics, researchers, and data professionals.

Google is particularly focusing on universities and research institutions, with a stated goal to “help research labs save time on data processing and analysis by generating complete, working Colab notebooks from simple natural language descriptions.”
