Three Lagos assembly workers remanded by court for ‘ass@ulting’ DSS officials

The Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the remand of three workers of the State House of Assembly for allegedly ass@ulting officials of the Department of State Services (DSS).

On Tuesday, February 25, Justice Daniel Osiagor directed that Ibrahim Olanrewaju, Adetu Adekunle, and Fatimoh Adetola be held in custody pending their arraignment on Wednesday, February 26.

The DSS charged the three workers with offences related to the alleged ass@ult on its officials while they were on official duty. The secret police also accused them of cyberstalking, recording, and circulating false information on social media to undermine law and order in the country. According to the DSS, the trio engaged in “willful misdirection of electronic messages to social media to embarrass its officials” while they were on duty at the Lagos assembly complex on February 17.

When DSS counsel Michael Bajela approached the court for their arraignment, Justice Osiagor said he needed to review the case file before proceeding.

On February 17, videos circulated on social media showing DSS operatives inside the Lagos assembly complex, leading to allegations that they had obstructed lawmakers from holding a plenary session. In one of the videos, DSS operatives were seen in a physical struggle with lawmakers, sparking mixed reactions from the public.

Further details later emerged that the DSS was officially invited to the assembly complex by the acting clerk to maintain order following intelligence that Mudashiru Obasa, the ousted speaker, planned to resume office on February 18—a move the assembly believed posed a security risk.

The Lagos assembly has remained in the spotlight since the removal of Obasa as speaker on January 13 while he was out of the country, and the election of Mojisola Meranda as his replacement. Upon his return, Obasa refused to accept his removal, insisting that due process was not followed and declaring himself the legitimate speaker of the house.

Ogun court sentences man to six months in jail for stealing hen

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, has sentenced three individuals for theft and breach of trust.
They were arraigned separately by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Ogun State Command, before the Ago-Iwoye Magistrates’ Court.
The convicts are Joseph, 29, Kazeem Tobi, 20, and Adebanjo Segun, 21.
A statement made available to DAILY POST by the NSCDC spokesperson, D**e Ogbonnaya, on Tuesday, stated that Joseph was arrested for fraudulently withdrawing N225,000 from a POS machine belonging to one Olatona Waheed into his personal account.
Ogbonnaya noted that upon interrogation, Joseph confessed to the crime and was charged before the Ago-Iwoye Magistrates’ Court on a three-count charge bordering on breach of trust, theft, and obtaining by false pretence.
Appearing before Magistrate Adeduntan, Joseph pleaded not guilty.
Delivering her judgment, the magistrate sentenced him to one year in prison, having committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 419 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, Nigeria.
Similarly, Kazeem Tobi was sentenced to six months in prison for stealing an Elepaq generator valued at approximately N120,000. He was arrested by operatives while attempting to sell the generator to a scavenger and was subsequently charged with two counts bordering on conspiracy to commit a felony and possession of an item reasonably suspected to have been stolen.
Upon presentation of the facts, the court found the defendant guilty under Section 430 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, Nigeria, 2006, and sentenced him accordingly to six months in prison.
Meanwhile, Adebanjo Segun was arrested for stealing a hen.
Following a thorough examination of the case and completion of investigations, it was discovered that the defendant had committed the same offence in December 2024, for which he had been pardoned as a supposed first-time offender.
In light of this revelation, he was charged before the Ago-Iwoye Magistrates’ Court on a single count under Section 430 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, Nigeria, 2006, on 20th February 2025.
After pleading guilty before Magistrate Adeduntan, he was convicted and sentenced to six months in prison.

Trump's agenda faces major hurdle as US House votes on budget resolution

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, faces a major fiscal hurdle as the US House, led by Speaker Mike Johnson, struggles to rally Republicans to vote on the budget resolution.
Tuesday’s budget resolution vote marks the first test for Speaker Johnson in securing support for Trump’s agenda, which is expected to include $2 trillion in overall spending cuts and $4.5 trillion in tax reductions.
Indications from the US House suggest that a number of Republican members have expressed opposition to the resolution. Meanwhile, Democrats are also prepared to challenge Trump’s agenda.
“We’re planning to take up our budget resolution as early as today,” Johnson said at a news conference following a GOP meeting.
“There may be a vote tonight; there may not be,” he later added.
He continued: “There’s always more work to do right up to the end for a big vote like this, and this is a big one. We’re very, very close.”
Earlier, Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform, eulogising the “one big, beautiful bill” that “implements my FULL America First Agenda, EVERYTHING, not just parts of it!” while urging both chambers to pass the resolution.
It is worth noting that the Senate passed its own spending plan last week, which omits tax policy, leaving it to be addressed at a later date.
