About: Myanmar is a country where 70% of the population are small-holder farmers. As the reform process continues, land conflict has emerged at the center of the political debate. The country is being coveted as the final investment frontier in South East Asia, with abundant fertile agricultural land as one of its most valuable assets. Despite assurances from the Government that farmers will be at the forefront of economic reforms, to date land laws and policies have failed to protect them.

A great (slightly old) piece on the catastrophic and far-reaching impact of mercury poisoning from small-scale gold mining in Indonesia.

We need this kind of data for Myanmar, where mercury use in gold mining will have some serious impacts.

“We estimate that more than eight million persons in these countries suffered disease, disability or death resulting from exposures to industrial contaminants in 2010, resulting in 828,722 DALYs,” the authors wrote. That means among the approximately 8.6 million people living near those sites, an estimated 828,722 years of healthy life were lost.
