For more than 20 years, the human Y chromosome was the last chromosome that scientists couldn’t fully decode because almost half of it is made up of highly repetitive DNA that was extremely difficult to sequence accurately.

Now, using advanced long-read sequencing and improved computer methods, researchers have finally assembled the entire Y chromosome from end to end. The new sequence adds more than 30 million previously missing DNA letters to the human genome reference and reveals 41 additional protein-coding genes.

Scientists also uncovered complicated repeating patterns and corrected mistakes found in older genome references, including regions containing genes linked to s***m production and fertility.

When complete Y chromosomes from dozens of people were compared, researchers found that the chromosome can vary much more in size and structure than previously thought, revealing an unexpected level of genetic diversity.

Completing the Y chromosome is a major milestone in genomics because scientists can now study DNA regions that were previously hidden, potentially improving research into male infertility, cancer, human evolution, inherited diseases, and many other areas of human health.

Researchers have developed a biodegradable protein gel that could offer a new way to repair damaged joint cartilage.

Natural cartilage has a difficult job: it needs to be strong enough to support body weight while also being flexible and tough enough to handle repeated impacts without breaking.

Scientists recreated these properties by physically intertwining protein chains within the gel, giving it the ability to withstand pressure and quickly return to its original shape after being compressed.

Instead of remaining in the body permanently, the gel works as a temporary scaffold. Once placed inside a damaged joint, surrounding cells can grow into it and begin producing new cartilage while the material gradually breaks down.

In rabbit studies, researchers observed cartilage and bone regeneration within 12 weeks, with the gel completely gone and no signs of immune rejection.

Interestingly, stiffer versions of the material produced better tissue regeneration than softer ones. The research suggests that future cartilage implants could do more than simply fill damaged areas—they could provide the right physical environment for the body to rebuild stronger, healthier joint tissue.
