Romania’s Alien Landscape: Vulcanii Noroioși
We didn’t expect Romania to feel like another planet but that’s exactly what happened at the Vulcanii Noroioși (Mud Volcanoes) in Buzău County.
On day one, we explored Pâclele Mari, the bigger of the 2 volcanic fields in the area: a vast, barren landscape that looks like Mars, with bubbling mud craters and cracked earth as far as the eye can see. The next day, we hiked to Pâclele Mici, where dozens of tiny mud volcanoes erupted right beside us.
The 2 sites felt completely different: one like a desert on another planet, the other like a living, breathing micro-world.
These “volcanoes” aren’t hot lava, but cold mud pushed up by natural gas from 3000m deep underground. Standing there, watching the earth bubble and shift, it truly felt like Earth revealing its hidden heartbeat.
If you’re planning a trip to Romania, add the Mud Volcanoes to your bucket list! They’re one of the country’s most unique natural wonders.
