They found the kitten in a backyard—crying, hollow with that particular kind of loneliness that echoes when a mother doesn’t come back.

Inside, they set her in a small bed to warm. The resident ginger girl hopped in without a fuss, curled her body around the trembling scrap of fur, and began to purr—deep and steady, like a lullaby that knows what it’s doing.

Ten minutes later: not a sound.
Two warm commas tucked together, the baby asleep with one tiny paw on her new friend’s chest, the ginger’s eyes half-mooned in contentment.

Sometimes family is made in the span of a purr.
