Why are we letting the sea in? 🌊

It sounds counterintuitive, but at Northey Island in Essex, the best way to save the coast is to remove the walls.

We’re losing our salt marshes at an alarming rate, 85% since the 1860s, and with them, our defence against climate change.

By removing 200m of sea wall, the is creating a “managed retreat” that actually extends the life of the land by decades!

⛵ Could sail-powered research solve a problem most people don’t even know exists?

Here’s the part of ocean conservation nobody talks about…Most critical research never happens.

Not because scientists lack expertise. Because a week of vessel time costs more than their entire grant.

Charlie Young and Alexis d’Hennecourt watched this play out for years.

Projects with solid methodology, urgent questions, qualified teams, killed by a line item in a budget spreadsheet…So they turned a sailboat into a mobile research platform.

Their first test started in the Southern Bahamas’ for a 6 week shark survey, monitoring 3 island chains that have never had comprehensive population data.

They deployed baited remote cameras, logged over 1,000 field hours, documented species distribution in waters most researchers can’t afford to access.

Now with a successful launch, their second mission has taken them to the Turks & Caicos for Humpback behavioral research

The model isn’t trying to replace anything. It’s trying to make the 80% of projects that currently die in peer review possible.
