Can a Christian Worship Jehovah Completely on His Own?
Imagine someone saying, “I want to reach my destination, but I don’t need a map, road signs, or fellow travelers.” He may sincerely want to get there, but Christianity is not presented in the Bible as a completely independent journey.
From ancient times, Jehovah has gathered his worshippers into an organized people. Israel had priests, elders, laws, and arrangements for worship. — Exodus 19:5, 6; Numbers 1:16.
When that system ended, Jehovah did not abandon organization. Jesus established the Christian congregation, and the apostles appointed elders and encouraged Christians to work together in unity. — Acts 14:23; Acts 15:22; 1 Corinthians 14:33, 40.
Acts 15:14 says that Jehovah would take out from the nations “a people for his name.” This shows that his worshippers would be more than isolated individuals.
Isaiah 2:2-4 also describes people from many nations coming together to learn Jehovah’s ways and worship him unitedly.
Jesus prayed that his followers would be “one.” — John 17:20, 21. So Christian freedom does not mean separating ourselves from the congregation or fellow worshippers.
The important question is not simply, “Am I a Christian?” Rather, we should ask: “Am I worshipping Jehovah in the united way his Word describes?”
