Revolutionising Healthcare: Nigeria Unveils First Locally Produced Glucose Meter Facility

The Federal Government led by Coordinating Health Minister Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate has launched Colexa Biosensor Diagnostics Manufacturing, Nigeria's maiden indigenous glucose meter facility. This initiative falls in line with the Unlocking Healthcare Value Chain Initiative and Health Sector Renewal Compact.

Addressing the country's growing diabetes burden, expected to reach 20-25% by 2030, the minister highlighted government efforts to mitigate financial strains linked to disease diagnosis and treatment.

Colexa Biosensor's ability to upscale production, surpassing national requirements to potentially export, offers job creation and economic benefits along the value chain. The minister underscored plans to stimulate private sector involvement, attract investments, and restructure healthcare manufacturing cycles to cater to African markets.

The move holds substantial significance as currently, 3.6 million Nigerians depend on imported glucose meters, exposing them to market volatility. The local production ensures accessibility, affordability, and economic advantages, especially as Nigeria aims for self-sufficiency in healthcare manufacturing.

The inauguration signifies a watershed moment, promoting local innovation while addressing healthcare challenges posed by diabetes. It aligns with Nigeria's broader health system improvements, positioning the nation for self-reliance, economic sustainability, and global competitiveness in health technology.

Osun Governor Affirms Commitment to Retain Health Workers Amid "Japa Syndrome"

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun state has pledged to foster an environment conducive to retaining healthcare professionals, addressing concerns regarding the exodus of health workers from the state. Speaking at the inauguration of the Osun Health Insurance Scheme (OHIS) Office Complex in Abere, Osogbo, Adeleke emphasized the government's strategic measures to combat the "Japa syndrome."

Adeleke outlined initiatives aimed at retaining health workers, including the full payment of hazard allowances as approved by the Federal Government. He assured the replacement of departed healthcare staff with new recruits offering improved remuneration, a provision budgeted for in the 2024 fiscal year.

Highlighting the administration's focus on healthcare infrastructure, the governor announced plans for the renovation of 332 primary health centers and several comprehensive health centers across the state. Adeleke stressed the importance of the OHIS office complex in administering health insurance policies, aiming to curtail out-of-pocket expenses for medical treatment.

Moreover, the governor emphasized the compulsory enrollment of political office holders and civil servants into the Osun Health Insurance Scheme. He urged active participation from the informal sector, encouraging traders, artisans, businessmen, and unions to embrace the program.

In a separate meeting with journalists, Governor Adeleke expressed gratitude for their support and announced his return to the state after a vacation. He conducted an inspection of the ongoing road dualisation project at the Oke-Fia Axis in Osogbo, demonstrating his commitment to infrastructure development in Osun.
