Revolutionising Healthcare: Nigeria Unveils First Locally Produced Glucose Meter Facility
The Federal Government led by Coordinating Health Minister Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate has launched Colexa Biosensor Diagnostics Manufacturing, Nigeria's maiden indigenous glucose meter facility. This initiative falls in line with the Unlocking Healthcare Value Chain Initiative and Health Sector Renewal Compact.
Addressing the country's growing diabetes burden, expected to reach 20-25% by 2030, the minister highlighted government efforts to mitigate financial strains linked to disease diagnosis and treatment.
Colexa Biosensor's ability to upscale production, surpassing national requirements to potentially export, offers job creation and economic benefits along the value chain. The minister underscored plans to stimulate private sector involvement, attract investments, and restructure healthcare manufacturing cycles to cater to African markets.
The move holds substantial significance as currently, 3.6 million Nigerians depend on imported glucose meters, exposing them to market volatility. The local production ensures accessibility, affordability, and economic advantages, especially as Nigeria aims for self-sufficiency in healthcare manufacturing.
The inauguration signifies a watershed moment, promoting local innovation while addressing healthcare challenges posed by diabetes. It aligns with Nigeria's broader health system improvements, positioning the nation for self-reliance, economic sustainability, and global competitiveness in health technology.
