🏡 SERIES 1: Challenges nobody warned us about when buying an old cottage…

Our cottage is believed to date back to somewhere between 1770 and 1830 and was likely originally a farm worker’s cottage or smallholding.

Which sounds incredibly romantic… until you actually try to buy and renovate one 😂

The paperwork is old. Like, really old.

Our solicitor has been going back and forth trying to interpret some of the original documents, and then there are the boundary questions…

Because back then, things weren’t always documented in the way they are today. Sometimes it was a handshake, a conversation and a rough understanding of where the land ended.

And then there’s planning…

We put our planning application in almost as soon as our offer was accepted, but because we didn’t legally own the property yet, we needed the current owner’s permission to apply.

So before we’ve even got the keys, we’ve already dealt with centuries-old paperwork, unclear boundaries and planning applications.

And this is only the beginning…
