A little BEAR update…

BEAR SEND Support has been a little quieter than planned this week as I’ve unexpectedly spent some time in hospital.

I’m home now, but under strict instructions to rest and recover — something I’m admittedly not very good at! 😂

So, for the next week or so, BEAR is going to be taking a little rest alongside me.

I’m hoping to be back to posting, sharing and building BEAR from 24th August, ready to pick up where we left off.

Thank you for bearing with me (sorry, couldn’t resist 🐻😂) while I take a bit of time to get myself back on my feet.

BEAR isn’t going anywhere — just having a very short hibernation. 🐻🌿

When progress feels stuck… it doesn’t always mean progress has stopped. 💚

SEND progress is rarely a straight line. There can be steps forward, pauses, wobbles and periods where a child is using so much energy just to cope that the progress happening underneath is easy to miss.

Sometimes progress looks like asking for help. Trying again after something went wrong. Going into school with a little less worry. Recovering from overwhelm more quickly. Or simply believing in themselves a little more.

And if things really do feel stuck, that’s information too. It may be time to look again at the demands, environment or support around the child — rather than simply asking them to try harder.

Small wins count. Quiet progress counts. Every step forward matters. 🐻

Progress isn’t always visible.

When we think about progress, it’s easy to focus on reading levels, test scores or grades.

But for many children with SEND, some of the biggest achievements happen quietly.

✨ Walking into school without feeling overwhelmed.
✨ Asking for help instead of struggling in silence.
✨ Trying something new.
✨ Recovering more quickly after becoming dysregulated.
✨ Making a friend.
✨ Believing in themselves just a little bit more.

These moments may not appear on a report card, but they are every bit as important.

When we recognise non-academic progress, we begin to see the whole child—not just their attainment. That bigger picture helps families, schools and professionals understand what’s working, identify what support is needed, and celebrate every step forward.

Because progress isn’t about keeping up with someone else’s journey.

It’s about helping each child move forward from where they are.

Every small step counts.
Every success deserves to be seen.

Not every child needs the same support. And that’s okay. 💚

One child may need a wobble cushion. Another may need extra processing time. Another might use a visual timetable, headphones or an alternative way to record their work.

From the outside, that can sometimes look “different” or even “unfair.”

But fairness isn’t about giving every child the same thing.

It’s about understanding each child’s strengths, challenges and barriers, then providing the support that helps them access learning, build confidence and make progress.

The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal isn’t to make learning easier.

The goal is to remove barriers so every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Every child deserves to be seen as an individual—not compared to the child sitting next to them.

Different children.
Different needs.
Different support.

Inside the SENCO Office 🐻

Behind every meeting, phone call, referral and report is someone trying to build the strongest possible picture of a child’s needs.

Being a SENCO isn’t just about paperwork. It’s about gathering evidence, challenging decisions when needed, navigating complex systems and keeping the child at the centre of every conversation. Sometimes that means celebrating progress. Sometimes it means pushing back, asking difficult questions and refusing to give up when the answer is “no.”

Not every SENCO gets it right, and every school faces different challenges. But many work incredibly hard behind the scenes to secure the support children deserve, often without families ever seeing the full picture.

To every SENCO who keeps advocating, keeps documenting and keeps believing in children when the system makes it hard—thank you.

🏫 How schools can support SEND every day.

The best SEND support isn’t always the big, obvious interventions.

Sometimes it’s the teacher who notices a child needs a movement break before they become overwhelmed.

Sometimes it’s the LSA who quietly adapts an activity, offers reassurance or gives a child the extra time they need.

Sometimes it’s the relationship between home and school. Sharing information, celebrating small successes and working together to understand the child.

Not every school is there yet, and every setting faces different challenges. But when children are seen, understood and supported with kindness, they are far more likely to feel safe, confident and ready to learn.

Every child deserves that.

Sometimes the biggest shift isn’t in the child… it’s in how we see them.

Over the last few days we’ve explored what can happen when we look beyond behaviour.

We’ve talked about behaviour as communication, why regulation comes before learning, how dysregulation can look different for every child, and why what looks like “won’t” is sometimes actually “can’t.”

When we change the questions we ask, we often change the answers we find.

Sometimes the behaviour looks exactly the same.

A child who won’t start their work.
A child who walks away.
A child who says “no.”

But the reason behind that behaviour can be completely different.

When we pause and ask, “What might be making this difficult?” instead of “Why won’t they?”, we open the door to understanding, support and connection.

💚 What can dysregulation look like?

When we hear the word dysregulation, many of us picture a meltdown.

But every child is different.

For some, dysregulation can be loud. For others, it can be quiet. It can even look like constant movement, silliness, talking non-stop or seeming absolutely fine on the outside.

What we see is only one small part of the picture.

Behind dysregulation there can be anxiety, sensory overload, uncertainty, exhaustion, frustration or simply a child whose nervous system is overwhelmed.

The behaviour may look different, but the need is often the same… to feel safe, understood and supported.

Every child experiences dysregulation differently, but every child deserves to be met with understanding, curiosity and support.

When children feel understood, they are more able to feel safe, to learn, and to thrive.
