Most people know "Marcus Garvey" and "Slavery Days". But 'Burning Spear' is deeper than the music. Here are facts that shock even hardcore reggae fans:
He Changed His Name Because of a Vision + A Gunshot.
Real name: Winston Rodney.
In 1969 he was shot in the leg in a robbery. While recovering in hospital, he had a spiritual vision of a "burning spear" — a symbol of African resistance.
He dropped "Winston Rodney" and became BURNING SPEAR. He said: "The spear don’t miss. It burns through Babylon."
He Refused to Record With Drum Machines... EVER
While everyone in the 80s/90s went digital and dancehall, Burning Spear banned drum machines from his studio.
Every album from 1975 to today is live instruments only.
He told producers: "If it nah have heart beat, it nah fi play." That’s why his music still sounds like 1975 in 2026.
He Won 2 Grammys... And Never Attended Either Ceremony.
2000: "Call An Emergency"
2009: "Jah Is Real"
He won both Best Reggae Album Grammys and didn’t show up. No suit. No speech.
He said: "My award is the people hearing the message."
Only reggae artist with 2 Grammys who boycotted the stage.
He’s a History Teacher, Not Just a Singer.
Burning Spear spent years studying African history, Marcus Garvey, and Haile Selassie I before he ever recorded.
He can lecture for 3 hours straight on the Ethiopian Empire, Back to Africa, and Pan-Africanism — no notes.
His songs are literally history lessons set to drums. Schools in Africa now use "Marcus Garvey" to teach kids.
He Owns His Masters + Label Since 1975.
At 30 years old he told Island Records: "No." and started 'Burning Music'.
50 years later he still owns 100% of his music. No label owns Burning Spear.
That’s why you never see him in "featurings" or TikTok trends. He said: "I nah sell my spirit."
He Speaks in Riddles On Purpose.
Listen closely. He rarely says words straight. "Marcus Garvey Dread" , “Creation and Re-Creation”

He Retired... Then Came Back Because of a Dream.
In 2016 he announced retirement. 3 years later he had a dream of Marcus Garvey telling him "The work isn’t finished."
He came back in 2019 with “No Destroyer” tour at age 74. Still touring barefoot in 2025.
He once said and I quote:
“Music is a weapon. If you use it right, you can free a nation.”
Bob gave reggae to the world. Burning Spear gave reggae back to Africa.
