A reporter put a direct question to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent this week — does Trump still want Canada to become a US state?

Bessent's answer was carefully diplomatic but pointed.

"I think he would like Canada to come to the table and negotiate in good faith. Unfortunately Prime Minister Carney rose to power on an anti-American anti-Trump platform."

The Canada statehood question has been one of the more unusual recurring themes of Trump's second term — something he raises seriously while many Canadians dismiss it entirely.

Bessent's framing suggests the real issue for the administration is not statehood itself but Canada's willingness to engage constructively with Washington on trade and other issues.

With Carney having built his entire political brand around standing up to Trump the relationship between the two countries remains genuinely complicated.

British politics is heating up again! Nigel Farage has broken his silence on a potential deal with Rupert Lowe and Restore Britain — and his words will surprise many Reform supporters.

Farage admitted that Restore Britain, despite having virtually no chance of winning seats outside Great Yarmouth, could do Reform "great harm" by splitting the right wing vote at the next general election.

He revealed he reached out to Lowe privately yesterday suggesting a call — but had not heard back at the time of speaking.

"If it was the offer of a deal it came in a very unusual way. I have responded to it with an open mind."

However Farage made one thing crystal clear — any deal would not come at the cost of ditching his existing allies including Suella Braverman and others he considers friends.

"I do not ditch people because somebody else wants me to."

With Labour struggling and the centre right vote potentially splitting between Reform and Restore Britain the stakes could not be higher heading into the next general election.

Trump personally called Senate Majority Leader John Thune this week pushing hard for the SAVE America Act — and Thune confirmed it publicly.

"I heard from him a couple of times this morning on issues that he cares about."

Thune revealed the Senate has already voted on the SAVE America Act five times with every single Democrat voting against it on each occasion.

He said he remains willing to do everything possible to get it across the finish line but was blunt about the reality.

"There are no Democrats who are going to vote for this. All 47 voted against the SAVE Act five times. So let's make this an issue in the campaign — how about we go out and turn our fire on Democrats and make it about them."

Trump has been pushing hard for the legislation while simultaneously demanding the filibuster be eliminated to get it passed — something Thune has been more cautious about.

The battle over the SAVE America Act is shaping up to be one of the defining political fights heading into the midterms.

Trump went after Democrat-run cities in characteristically blunt fashion this week.

"Look at the blue cities. What do they have in common? They're all dirty. They're filthy dirty. Their streets are dirty. Their streets smell. Their storefronts are broken. Their trees are all gross. Everything about the place is dirty. It's really all of them."

He also pointed to crime as a common thread, arguing Republican-run areas have significantly lower crime rates than Democrat-run cities.

Trump used Washington DC as his benchmark, suggesting it was in a similar state a year and a half ago before his administration took over.

Supporters will say he is stating uncomfortable truths that politicians are too afraid to say out loud.

Critics will argue he is painting millions of Americans and their communities with an unfairly broad brush for political purposes.

A reporter asked Trump whether Iran was behind a recent cyber attack on water systems — and his answer was not what anyone expected.

"Can you rule out that Iran is behind the cyber attack?"

Trump's response was immediate.

"You know who's behind it? Minnesota. Because they're grossly incompetent."

He went further, describing Minnesota as "one of the worst run states" and claiming JD Vance had uncovered "massive corruption" in the state with more revelations coming.

"I don't think there was an Iranian cyber attack. I think Minnesota ought to get its act together."

Whether you agree with Trump's assessment or not — blaming a US state rather than Iran for a cyber attack on water infrastructure is an extraordinary claim that immediately raises serious questions about what evidence exists either way.

One of the most dramatic congressional moments of the year just played out live.

Dr Anthony Fauci — who served at the NIH for over 54 years — used his opening statement to go directly after Senator Rand Paul before announcing he would be invoking the Fifth Amendment and refusing to answer his questions.

Fauci pointed out that he had testified before congressional committees over 200 times across his career and had always cooperated fully — but said Paul's behaviour had left him no choice.

"Given Senator Paul's obvious obsession with calling for my prosecution, his repeated slanderous comments about me and his publicly releasing my unredacted personal diary aimed at embarrassing and intimidating me — the only conclusion I can reach is that the sole reason he is calling me before this committee is to get me to say something that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up behind bars."

He then invoked the Fifth Amendment.

Paul responded by throwing Fauci's lawyer out of the hearing room entirely.

Whatever your view of Fauci or Paul — this is an extraordinary moment in American political history that will be talked about for years.

President Trump paused at the casket of his close friend and ally Senator Lindsey Graham — gently tapping it in a quiet and personal final farewell before taking his seat to deliver the eulogy.

Trump called Graham "a giant of the United States Senate and a true American original who left us much too soon."

Graham died suddenly on July 11 at the age of 71 after more than three decades serving his country in Congress.

Trump got one of the biggest laughs of the night at the White House Correspondents' Dinner with three simple lines.

"Just like my presidency the second time is always better. It's always better. And the third time will be better yet."

He paused — then added deadpan.

"I'm only kidding."

The room erupted.

The Constitution's 22nd Amendment bars a third term — but Trump then walked to the end of the speech and put on a red cap reading "Trump 2028" and told the room he was running again.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made a bold declaration in Georgia today.

"My own sense of his place in history is clear. Donald J Trump is the most consequential president of my lifetime."

He then turned to the economic argument directly.

"President Trump is creating assets for the American people — not more debt and broken promises."

Bessent has been one of Trump's most consistent and articulate defenders and this was arguably his most personal endorsement yet — making a direct historical judgement rather than just a policy case.
