🚨 Locals have spoken out about their concerns as they claim a mystery 'leak' on a road in Tameside has been causing a 'major health hazard' for more year and a half.

And the Environment Agency told the MEN the contamination may be affecting public health.

In correspondence sent to the Manchester Evening News, an anonymous local resident who claimed to be speaking on behalf of the local community, said a leak had been 'continuously discharging' down Alt Hill Lane in Ashton-under-Lyne for more than 18 months.

The resident, who said they feared it may be sewage, said the issue had been reported last year but alleged that 'absolutely no action has been taken to isolate the biohazard or protect the public.'

They said the main area affected was near the old railway bridge and entrance to the public bridleway on the rural road which sits on the border of Tameside and Oldham.

Dozens of pupils were barred entry from Denton Community Academy in Tameside for wearing skirts deemed too short on the first day of term 🏫

One father said he spent a fortune on official uniforms only for his teenage daughters to be turned away at the gates.

Around 40 to 50 pupils were kept outside in pouring rain because their skirts fell slightly above the knee.

The father says the girls were wearing standard-issue skirts bought from an official supplier and had not rolled them up.

"They were ringing us saying they weren't allowed to enter the school," he said.

"The skirts they had on were not rolled at all and fell a couple of inches above the knee, if that.

"It was throwing it down with rain and there were 40 or 50 kids standing outside, not allowed in. They were soaking wet and some were crying."

He visited the official uniform shop in Ashton and found the longest skirts available measured 20 inches, which still fall above the knee on an average-height 14-year-old.

He also pointed out that the school's own website displays a photo of a pupil wearing a skirt several inches above the knee.

"This is not an army camp. They're treating them like soldiers, but they are children, they need an education. It feels like punishment."

Northern Education Trust, which runs the school, stated that uniform expectations were communicated to families multiple times before the new academic year.

The trust added that decision-making is driven entirely by what is best for children and that all policies are applied fairly and consistently.

Denton Community Academy's open evening is scheduled for Wednesday 23 September 2026 at 5:30pm.
