Starting the day with voiceover recordings, then I'm off to RNCM - Royal Northern College of Music for academic supervision. Today I'm presenting a choral piece, and its sister piece for string orchestra. Yikes!

After that, it's party time! A dear colleague is retiring so we're having a gathering in her honour. Don't wait up!

02/07/2025

🎶 Curious what's in store for Saturday’s Breakfast on ?

We’ve got:
✨ Agitato con fuoco from Hélène de Montgeroult – fiery stuff for early risers
✨ Coleridge-Taylor’s Clarinet Quintet – like a gentle summer stroll
✨ Vaughan Williams’ Dives and Lazarus – a musical parable
✨ Rachmaninov, Purcell, Chopin, Saint-Saëns, Brahms...and much more!

The playlist is almost done!
See you Saturday, 06:30–09:00.

Another name from the pages of my 1917 autograph book:

Madam Zomah – The Woman Who Can Tell You Anything.

She performed at The Chatham Empire during WWI, dressed in an extraordinary costume and displayed amazing powers of telepathy. But who was she?

The autograph book is a portal to the past. Each signature is a thread connecting us to a vanished world of velvet curtains, gaslight, and mystery.

New Substack post on the extraordinary Zomah and the secrets she took to her grave:

I'm taking it a bit easier today. Last week I completed two big projects (my PhD annual review report and portfolio submission) and a 10 minute piece for string orchestra. So while I can't take a proper holiday right now, I'll be taking more coffee breaks, longer pauses between tasks and I plan to spend a good chunk of today sitting in the sun listening to glorious music!

Well, I’m turning in ready to be up bright and early at 3.30am tomorrow for a French themed Saturday Breakfast on BBC Radio 3 where we’ll be under the spell of Erik Satie. It’s 100 years since his birth, and his music weaves through the morning like a dream: lightly surreal, gently melancholic, always captivating.

There’ll also be sweeping Rachmaninov, fluttering Poulenc, a forest brought to life by Roussel, and a composer who (briefly) became a glassblower.

Join me tomorow, 0630-0900 on BBC Radio 3. Bring croissants! 🇫🇷

Missed Saturday Breakfast on Radio 3? You can still catch the sunrise... 🌅

Yesterday’s programme was a musical journey through light and shadow: Chopin in poetic flow, an Australian gem full of unsaid words, and MacMillan’s radiant dawn...and we danced a conga!

🎧 Listen back on BBC Sounds.
