With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of Aja Binta Jammeh‑Sidibeh, a visionary leader, tireless advocate, and the founding spirit behind the Sobeya Skills Training Centre in Churchill's Town—a beacon of hope that empowered countless Gambian women and girls.

Born in Banjul in the 1950s to Natoma Marong Jammeh and Alhagie Karamo Jammeh of Illiassa, she distinguished herself early on—earning top marks in her primary years and winning a government scholarship to pursue secondary studies and eventually higher education abroad.

Between 1967 and 1974, her remarkable achievements at Gambia Senior Secondary School paved the way for further opportunity .

Beyond empowering women through skills, Binta shaped national policy. As Executive Director of the Women’s Bureau (circa 2014–2017), she championed a landmark amendment to criminalize FGM, and in 2019–2020 defended it against repeal attempts .

She also urged women to vote for one another—to stand together in politics and decision‑making—to reshape the nation from within .
May Ya Allah grant you the highest jannah-tul-firdawsi.
Ameen...

PURA CLARIFIES:
Recently, there has been some confusion and misinformation circulating regarding PURA’s new data regulation. We want to clear things up and ensure that everyone understands what is really happening.

First, let’s talk about the current cheap data bundles—such as 12GB for D145 or D146. These are not permanent packages.

They are temporary summer promotions offered by the mobile companies themselves, like Africell and Qcell. These promotional offers will end soon, and when they do, data prices will return to their regular, much higher rates.

To be clear, PURA did not ask any company to stop these promotions, and they are still ongoing for now. However, once these promotional packages expire, consumers will go back to paying much more—for example, D130 for just 1GB of data from Africell.

What Is PURA Doing?

PURA is implementing a new regulation that will limit how much mobile operators can charge for data. Under this new rule, no operator in The Gambia can charge more than D50 for 1GB of data.

To put this in perspective:

Currently (without promotions), 1GB of data costs D130.

With the new PURA regulation, that same 1GB will cost D50 or less.

That’s a savings of D80 per gigabyte.

This move is about making data more affordable and fairer for consumers across The Gambia.

Normal Data Prices (Without Promotions)

Here is what mobile data currently costs without any promotions, for both Africell and Qcell:

Data Price

20MB D7.50
40MB D9
50MB (Africell only) D11
80MB D18
100MB D24
150MB D30
200MB D40
300MB D60
500MB D90
750MB D98
1GB D130
1.5GB D145
2GB (Africell only) D180
3GB D255
4GB D450
5GB D595
8GB D780
10GB D950
12GB (Africell only) D1120
13GB D1190
15GB D1490
20GB (Africell only) D1790
25GB (Qcell only) D1790

As you can see, 12GB of data currently costs D1120 under normal pricing. But right now, due to the summer promotion, users can get that same 12GB for only D145 with Africell or D146 with Qcell.

However, once the promotion ends, D145 will only get you 1.5GB instead of 12GB.

How Does PURA’s Regulation Help You?

With PURA’s new pricing cap, you would be able to get 12GB for just D600 instead of the usual D1120—even after promotions end. That’s almost 50% in savings. It ensures that data remains affordable even when companies are no longer running special offers.

Some sources (on social media) are falsely claiming that PURA is taking away your cheap data bundles. That is not true. The promotions were never permanent to begin with, and PURA is not the one ending them. In fact, PURA is the one stepping in to protect you after the promotions are gone.

Their aim is to prevent mobile companies from charging excessive rates for data once the promos end.

And yes, PURA has full legal authority to regulate mobile operators in The Gambia. They are acting entirely within the law to ensure that mobile internet is accessible and affordable to all Gambians.

Wasallam!!

Malick Badjie, the 19-year-old car drifter has been sentenced to three (3) years in prison with hard labour after he was found guilty of reckless and dangerous driving, in violation of Section 35(5) of the Motor Traffic Act.

The incident, which occurred on July 18, 2025, involved Badjie performing dangerous drifting maneuvers within the premises of Abuko School, during which he struck 13-year-old pupil Abdourahman Bah, forcefully throwing him against a wall. The impact caused severe bodily injuries to the young student.

In addition to the custodial sentence, the court ordered Badjie to pay a compensation of one million dalasis (GMD 1,000,000) to the victim. Failure to pay the compensation will result in an additional two-year prison term.

Magistrate Ismaila Dibba, while delivering the verdict, remarked, "If God had not saved him, the victim could have been killed instantly on the spot."

The ruling has been widely welcomed by the public, who view it as a strong message against reckless behaviour, particularly in sensitive areas such as schools.

Well done to the Bundung Magistrates' Court!

The Mariama K***a junction, a vital transit point for thousands of commuters daily, has recently descended into chaos due to a poorly timed road construction project.

In what appears to be a textbook case of mismanagement, authorities began major construction works in the heart of the rainy season!

While infrastructure development is essential, the timing of such projects must be guided by logic, weather patterns, and the basic needs of the population. Initiating road construction in the middle of the rainy season is both counterproductive and deeply inconsiderate.

It slows progress, increases costs, and compounds the suffering of daily commuters who rely on that route for work, school, and essential services.

Gambian Tech Mogul Muhammed Jah, Gifts 500-Seat Pavilion to KG5 Stadium, Marking a New Era for Banjul Football Fans

Muhammed Jah, founder of QuantumNet Group, has donated a brand-new 500-seat pavilion to the iconic KG5 Mini Stadium in Banjul.

This transformative gift marks the end of years of sun-drenched and rain-soaked match days for loyal fans at the famous “Jamaica End,” a section of the stadium long known for its vibrant spirit but lack of shelter.

Unveiled this week to widespread praise, the pavilion is being hailed by the Banjul Sports Committee as a “timely intervention” — a long-awaited solution that brings comfort and dignity to the matchday experience for supporters.

“This is just the beginning,” said Jah, one of West Africa’s trailblazing tech entrepreneurs, during the unveiling ceremony. “We are committed to seeing the KG5 stadium evolve, and we will continue to support more upgrades in the near future.”

The new seating area is more than just concrete and steel — it’s a symbol of progress and possibility. For many in Banjul, especially young people inspired by both sports and innovation, Jah’s donation stands as a testament to what vision and generosity can achieve.

Bravo!
