His Majesty The King has approved the appointment of Lord Briggs of Westbourne as the next President of the Supreme Court. The King made the appointment on the advice of the Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor, following the recommendation of an independent selection commission. Lord Briggs will take up his new role in January 2027, when the current President, Lord Reed, retires. Lord Briggs will be the Court's fifth President since it was established in 2009.

The Secretary of State for Justice has announced the reappointment of Martin Jones as His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Probation. Martin Jones’ reappointment will be for a second term of 3 years from 1 March 2027 to 30 April 2030.

New on CrimeLine: Chromczuk & Ors v Polish Judicial Authority [2026] EWHC 2276 (Admin).

The Administrative Court has refused renewed permission to appeal against extradition in three linked Polish cases, holding that KMPT prison inspection reports and a German court's refusal to extradite to Poland did not displace the strong presumption of Article 3 compliance owed to an EU member state. The court found the German decision applied a materially lower test than the real risk standard used in this jurisdiction, and that the photographic and inspection evidence relied on came from a narrower set of sources than first appeared. Applications to instruct a prisons expert were also refused as inadmissible opinion evidence on materials already before the court.

Hemmings [2026] EWCA Crim 1149 — The Court of Appeal has refused a renewed application for leave to appeal a 2018 murder conviction, brought nearly six years out of time on 24 grounds. Finding the application wholly without merit, the court imposed a three-month loss of time order.

Naeem [2026] EWCA Crim 1148 — A useful reminder on s.325 Sentencing Act 2020: the Court of Appeal has corrected a Crown Court sentence to credit 111 days for time spent on a qualifying bail curfew, an easy calculation to miss at first instance.

Harrison [2026] EWCA Crim 1153 — The Court of Appeal has dismissed a challenge to a 12-year sentence for large-scale drug supply and money laundering, confirming that a consecutive sentence for possessing criminal property is not impermissible double counting where it reflects a distinct criminal event.

Wright [2026] EWCA Crim 1150 — The Court of Appeal has upheld a 9-year sentence for causing death by dangerous driving, confirming that a highly dangerous manoeuvre and a deliberate disregard of the rules of the road can properly be treated as two separate culpability factors.

Jacobs [2026] EWCA Crim 1155 — The Court of Appeal has reduced a sentence for possession with intent to supply crack co***ne, holding that an accepted basis of plea limiting supply to occasional, non-profit sharing with friends took the case below the typical category 3 street-dealing scenario.

Smart [2026] EWCA Crim 1157 — The Court of Appeal has clarified that the s.312 minimum sentence provisions require a single custodial term of at least six months, not a separate six-month uplift, and has revisited when a broken bottle amounts to a highly dangerous weapon (see also Jadeja and Dixon).

Pymont [2026] EWCA Crim 1151 — A significant historic IPP case: the Court of Appeal has quashed an indeterminate sentence imposed in 2006, finding the dangerousness test in Lang was never properly applied, and has called (echoing Haycock, handed down the same day) for a system to identify other unappealed, flawed IPP sentences still being served.

New on CrimeLine: R. v. Hornsby, 2026 ONCA 604.

The Court of Appeal for Ontario has quashed convictions for assault and sexual assault against a former spouse, finding the trial judge applied uneven scrutiny to the Crown and defence evidence throughout a credibility-driven trial. The court's reasons work through each of the four counts individually, illustrating why a trial judge's general credibility findings cannot substitute for count-by-count analysis. A new trial has been ordered.
