800 years of paintings. Countless artists. One color. This is not a coincidence. 💙

Blue wasn't just the most expensive pigment in the world — it was also the color of heaven, purity, and everything beyond human reach. 💙

In Madonna of the Meadow, every colour was chosen with purpose. Mary’s red robe represents her humanity, while her ultramarine blue mantle symbolises her purity and heavenly dignity. Raphael wasn’t just creating a beautiful painting—he was telling a story through colour.

Why Was Ultramarine Blue Reserved For The Virgin Mary?

This is one of those paintings that becomes more extraordinary the longer you look at it. There is no dramatic scene. No elaborate background. No grand display of emotion. Just silence.

The remarkable thing is what Sassoferrato chose to paint.

Not the Annunciation. Not the Nativity. Not the Crucifixion.

Instead, he painted a single moment of quiet prayer.

The downcast eyes. The folded hands. The gentle light. And above all, the brilliant ultramarine blue mantle.

Made from the precious stone lapis lazuli imported from Afghanistan, ultramarine was once more valuable than gold. Artists reserved it for the most sacred figures, and no one wore it more often than the Virgin Mary. It became a symbol of her purity, dignity, and heavenly queenship.

In my latest video, we explore The Virgin in Prayer by Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato and uncover the story, symbolism, and hidden meaning behind one of the most beautiful depictions of Mary ever painted.

Jesus, but unmistakably dead.

When Hans Holbein the Younger painted The Body of the Dead Christ in the Tomb, he created one of the most unsettling images in Christian art. Gone was the glorified Christ of tradition. Instead, Holbein showed a lifeless body marked by suffering, decay, and the full reality of death.

Centuries later, the painting would profoundly affect the writer Fyodor Dostoevsky, who reportedly said that a person could lose their faith from looking at it.

Why would a single painting provoke such a reaction?

In this video, we explore the story, symbolism, and hidden meaning behind one of the most controversial and haunting depictions of Christ ever created.

How can a painting be this unsettling?

This is one of those paintings that stays with you long after you’ve looked away. The longer you study it, the more shocking it becomes.

The remarkable thing is what Hans Holbein chose to show.

Not a glorified Christ. Not a triumphant Christ. Not even a peaceful Christ.

Instead, he painted a body that looks unmistakably dead.

The sunken eyes. The rigid fingers. The gaunt ribs. The wounds in the hands and side. Every detail confronts the viewer with the full reality of death in a way few artists ever dared.

It was so disturbing that, centuries later, Fyodor Dostoevsky reportedly stood before the painting and remarked that a person could lose their faith from looking at it.

In my latest video, we explore The Body of the Dead Christ in the Tomb and why it remains one of the most controversial, haunting, and unforgettable images in the history of Christian art.

Most paintings of Christ show His wounds. This one shows His mind.

Kramskoi’s “Christ in the Wilderness” broke centuries of tradition — no crown of thorns, no glory, just a man alone before dawn, wrestling with everything He knew was coming. Historians call it the first psychologically modern depiction of Christ.

And it connects to one of art history’s most haunting stories: Dostoevsky stood before Holbein’s “Body of the Dead Christ” and was so shaken, he nearly lost his faith on the spot.

Two paintings. One question that’s haunted believers for centuries — what does it mean that God could suffer like we do?
