CHALLENGING THE OLD SCRIPT: BEING A GOOD HUMAN 📝🚶‍♂️

We’ve all heard the phrases. We’ve all been told how we "should" behave and what it means to be a man. At Men Walking and Talking, we’re crossing out the old scripts and writing something better.

🚫 BOYS WILL BE BOYS...

Actually, boys will be respectful and responsible for their actions. We believe in raising and being men who understand the impact of their words and deeds on those around them.

🚫 BOYS DON’T CRY...

Sometimes they do, and that’s more than okay. Strength isn’t about holding it all in until you break; it’s about having the courage to let it out, talk it through, and move forward.

🤝 HOW WE SHOW UP FOR WOMEN

Part of being a "good human" is ensuring the women in our lives feel safe, respected, and heard.

Respect is the Baseline: It’s about active listening and valuing perspectives without judgment.

Equality in Action: Supporting the women around us means being allies—standing up against disrespect and ensuring we are partners in every sense of the word.

Safety & Support: A good man uses his strength to create a safe environment for everyone.

🚫 ACT LIKE A MAN...

We prefer: act like a good human. Be kind.Be protective. Be supportive of the brothers walking next to you and the women walking through life with you.

The path is open to every man who is ready to leave the "old rules" behind and just be themselves.

SHOWING UP FOR THE ONES WHO DEPEND ON YOU 💙🏠

Being a "strong" man isn't about being a silent one. True strength is found in the courage to be emotionally available for your family, your children, and yourself.

As the graphic says: "We need more homes with emotionally available husbands and fathers."

When we choose to talk, to feel, and to be vulnerable, we aren't just helping our own mental health—we are teaching the next generation that it’s okay to do the same. We are showing our sons how to be men and our daughters what they should expect from the men in their lives.

Our message to every man today:

🚶Allow yourself to feel: Your emotions are valid.

🚶🏻‍♂️Communicate: Don't let things build up behind closed doors.

🚶Be vulnerable: Reach out to those you trust. It’s the bravest thing you can do.

🚶🏻‍♂️Showing up emotionally for yourself is the first step toward showing up for those who depend on you.

If you’re finding it hard to start those conversations at home, come and start them with us. No shame. No judgment. Just a walk with brothers who understand.

Great to be joined by Steve last night from Men Walking and Talking - Huddersfield as we get things started here in Manchester. Castlefield Basin was buzzing for St Patrick's Day and I couldn't help sharing a bit of history and local lore about the Manchester canal network.

Looking forward to welcoming any newcomers next week, same time same place:

First Manchester walk starts on Tuesday 3rd March!

Men Walking and Talking (MWAT)is a national community-based initiative to tackle the stigma around men's mental health by offering accessible peer support through regular group walks. The initiative has now spread to around 70 group walks around the UK and public awareness is spreading fast.

The idea is simple: a group of men gather at the same spot every week for a manageable, social walk. They listen, they share if they want to, or they just offer sociable company to whoever needs it. No cost, no special equipment needed, just same time, same place every week.

The first MWAT walk is starting NEXT WEEK and we look forward to seeing you there:
⏰6.30pm
📅Tuesday 3rd March
📍Deansgate-Castlefield Tram Stop (by the stairs/lift/wall of plants)
🗓️Every week same time, same place. Come as you are.

See you there!
