šŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆ Happy Pride Month from Fear Screen! šŸ–¤

June is here, and that means it’s Pride Month and we at Fear Screen are celebrating loud and proud.

Horror has always been a genre that speaks to the outsider, the misunderstood, the misfit and for decades, q***r audiences have found themselves reflected in its shadows. From the monstrous to the sublime, horror has given voice to those who live on the margins, and that bond between the LGBTQ+ community and the genre we love runs deep.

This month, we want to celebrate that connection. Q***r horror is thriving filmmakers and storytellers are crafting work that is bold, visceral, and beautifully, unapologetically q***r. Whether it’s q***r directors pushing the boundaries of the form, LGBTQ+ characters at the heart of the terror, or stories rooted in the real world fears of marginalised communities this is the kind of cinema Fear Screen lives for.

Fear Screen is a safe, welcoming space for everyone. No matter who you are, who you love, or how you identify if you love horror, you belong here. šŸ³ļøā€āš§ļøšŸ–¤

This Pride Month, we encourage you to seek out q***r horror, champion LGBTQ+ filmmakers, and celebrate the community that has always found power and solace in the dark.

From all of us at Fear Screen Happy Pride. Stay scary.

šŸ“¢ An important update from Fear Screen, please take a moment to read this one.

First things first: we owe you an apology. Communication from our end has been poor over the last few weeks, and that's not good enough. We're sorry.

We want to be honest with you rather than just go quiet and pretend everything's fine. Simon and I both work full-time in HETV and major studio film production it's never been a secret, and it's actually what shapes so much of what Fear Screen is. But that work is unpredictable, demanding, and when a production calls, you go. There's no negotiating with a shoot schedule.

Fear Screen runs almost entirely on our own money. No salaries, no grants, no comfortable pot of funding just two people who genuinely love horror cinema and believe the North East deserves something special, putting their wages where their mouth is. Most independent festivals don't reach sustainability until year five or six. We're not there yet, but we're building, and we're not going anywhere.

Now the 48 Hour Film Challenge. šŸŽ¬
We had dozens of sign-ups, which was brilliant to see. We only received two completed films but honestly? The judges say both are absolutely outstanding. Simon and I are going to watch them tonight and we can't wait to see them. These filmmakers delivered something genuinely impressive under a brutal deadline, and they deserve to be celebrated.

We were originally planning a cinema screening on 20th May alongside a feature film Q&A, but unfortunately the cast had scheduling changes and we had to pull it. We're now targeting the week commencing 22nd June for a full cinema showcase with a live stream and we'll be announcing the winner later this week, so keep your eyes on this page. šŸ‘€

To everyone who took part, supported us, or has simply stuck around, thank you. It means everything.

We'll be back in touch very soon. We promise to do better. šŸ–¤

ā€œAs I walked out one May morningā€ is a common refrain that can be found at the start of several traditional Beltane songs. The iteration used in this post’s title can be found in the folk song fittingly named ā€˜As I roved out’. Folk culture, being largely localised and often dismissed as a relic of our religious past, means that it is hard to track down quite when certain traditions, such as this song and line, began. Luckily for us, and certainly for the genre of folk horror, Beltane does have a rich history and continues to be celebrated by those either dedicated to the old ways or simply interested in preserving local colour. But what is Beltane?

Find out and discover why it’s the beating heart of folk horror over on The Panic Press. šŸŒæšŸ‚

Friday. The 13th. November. šŸ–¤šŸ•Æļø

We couldn’t have planned it better if we’d tried. (We absolutely planned it.)

Fear Screen’s first ever Awards Night is coming and the universe has aligned in the most delightfully sinister way possible.

A mystery venue. A woman in grey who never left. And a date that needs no introduction.

Here’s what we know… on Friday 13th November in a building with centuries of secrets, a permanent resident who didn’t rsvp, but she’ll be there regardless. Black tie. No exceptions.
Fear Screen’s very first Awards Night.

Thirteen has never looked so good.
Full venue reveal dropping soon. Where do you think we’ve booked for the most cursed, most glamorous night on Teesside’s horror calendar?

šŸŽŸļø Limited seats. Black tie only. You really don’t want to miss this one

Craig Conway has spent over two decades in front of the camera. Dog Soldiers. The Descent.

Red Riding was his first time directing a feature film, with Neil Marshall on board as executive producer.

We asked him straight: what were the biggest barriers you faced as a first time director?
This is 30 seconds of the beginning of his answer. The full response, and 50 minutes of uncut conversation with the full cast, is on the Fear Screen YouTube channel now.

Not every Q&A goes to plan from the first second.

Sharon Percy, who plays the social worker in Red Riding, had a minor disagreement with our microphone before we even got started.
