"There are reasons why his music so captivates listeners. It's meticulously constructed but not bereft of feeling; it's authentic in its personalized expression yet also capable of connecting broadly. Like any genuine artist, his works are deeply influenced by the people and places that were integral to his development."

Sheet music for Shakespeare's Jester for saxophone quartet is now available to buy from: https://www.wyastone.co.uk/

Across Shakespeare’s Jesters’ 9-minute duration, the composition unfolds a labyrinth of musical interrelationships and connections that showcase the musicians in a virtuosic display of rhythmic agility, counterpoint, skill, energy, dynamic range, timbre, clarity, and majesty. Throughout the kaleidoscopic journey, the work passes through many lively and colourful episodes, never losing its sense of dance, caprice, and effervescence. Shakespeare’s Jesters’ falls loosely into three arcs played without a pause. The opening three minutes is an exposition of animated materials with rhythmic vitality featuring contrapuntal hockets that ping-pong between players. Following are three contrapuntal phrases (lasting respectively 60, 120, and 90 seconds) throughout which the musical ingredients are further transformed and elaborated. The final 120 seconds, a mischievous caper. © Augusta Read Thomas

trombone concerto, The Book of Miracles, won an Ivor Novello Award in the orchestral category 2019.

The concerto, written for Helen Vollam and premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Alexander Vedernikov in February, impressed the judges who called it “a finely constructed concerto presented the soloist with challenging material”. They said, “the piece explores the full potential of the orchestra with a strong sense of thematic unity and it’s a major addition to the repertoire”.

New study scores available from Augusta Read Thomas - Composer :

NMP1295 Abracadabra (Suncatchers) (2024) for 11 virtuosi

“This is music that is always in motion, as if coming perpetually out of a magician’s hat. It leads but doesn’t direct, and is playful and subtle, dancing on light feet. It is music that conjures.”
— Huffington Post

NMP1296 Illuminations “Fanfare Sinfonia” (2023) for 9 brass, solo timpani and 3 percussion

When asked about the process of composition, Thomas’ replied, “it's like living inside of a poem… I think of myself, and have been described as, a poet-composer. I sculpt my music akin to how poets create, refine, and polish their poems.

Scores by Gavin Higgins

Percussion Concerto
The concerto features an array of unusual instruments for the soloist (opera gongs, tin cans, plastic buckets), but within the orchestra itself, if you listen carefully, you will also hear slide whistles, kazoos, dustbin lids, car horns, and even some squeaky dog toys!

Velocity
Velocity has a very simple introduction and allegro structure. The main element of the work – a six-note motif that is heard throughout the piece in various guises – is clearly presented in the opening brass statements and soaring string melody.

Lyrita publishing are releasing the violin and piano scores of George Lloyd Despite his facility in playing the violin and the importance he attached to his lessons with Albert Sammons, Lloyd was relatively slow to compose works for his own instrument. It was not until 1970 that Lloyd wrote Violin Concerto No.1, his first piece with a leading role for his own instrument, but this achievement seemed to stir his enthusiasm and during the next seven years he completed a number of pieces for violin and piano,
