Team V - Wokingham

Team V - Wokingham A youth volunteer group running social action campaigns in Wokingham. http://vinspired.com/teamv/lea It improves the chances of a child staying in school.

*** 1 in 3 children in the UK do not own a book ***

*** 25% of children do not think that reading is important ***

*** 43% of children in low income homes rarely or never read for pleasure ***

*** People with poor literacy skills are more likely to be dissatisfied with their life ***

Reading is important because:

It increases a child's vocabulary and grammar, and has the potential to improve

writing skills. It improves future probability of employment and higher quality of life. Offers laughter and entertainment and an alternative to television. Nurtures emotional development and improves self esteem. It is clear that reading is incredibly important in a childs development and can have a real positive impact on their lives. Over the next 7 weeks Team v will be running pop-up story circles in unexpected places, creative writing workshops to help children write their own stories and designing and launching a story writing competition to profile the creativity and imagination of children in Wokingham. This campaign is going to be incredibly rewarding but also a lot of fun! Working with children in a creative way to inspire them to continue reading outside of school! If you would like to get involved or help out with the campaign in anyway please contact Charlee on [email protected] or follow us on twitter .

Mr Michael Bond has sent us a lovely letter with the results of our story telling contest:

'Dear Charlee, Hullo again! As promised, I have now been through the top six entries for the story writing competition you kindly sent my for judging.
They made interesting reading and clearly the contestants have taken the project with all its ramifications very much to heart.
It's a difficult problem to write about because the solution depends very much on the needs of those most affected. In fact, you could say it's almost insoluble.
I think this dilemma come out most clearly in 'Yellow Monster' which is well thought out and nicely presented. It was certainly a story that painted a very clear picture in my mind, with its unresolved, but poignant ending. So, unhesitatingly, I think First prize should go to Naomi Bruce. Do give her my congratulations.
Of the remaining entries, I think 'The Zoo Keepers Change' by Chloe Griffiths and 'They're Coming' by (on my copy at least an unnamed author, deserve to be named runners up for their originality, and in the latter case for the illustrations. So congratulations to them as well.
Please tell them all, winners and losers alike, to keep up the good work.
And may I say, Charlee, before closing, good luck to you and your colleagues in the future. It must be very rewarding. Warm regards, Michael.'

Lovely, just lovely :-)
