Japan has officially begun the process of restarting the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, which is the largest facility of its kind in the world. On Wednesday evening, January 21, 2026, the operator Tokyo Electric Power Company, also known as TEPCO, started removing control rods from reactor number six to initiate the nuclear reaction. The massive plant, located in the Niigata prefecture, has been completely idle since 2012 following the nationwide shutdown of nuclear reactors after the Fukushima disaster. While the plant was scheduled to restart a day earlier, it was briefly delayed due to a technical issue with an alarm system during final safety checks. This restart is a major milestone for TEPCO, as it is the first time the company has been allowed to operate a nuclear reactor since its other facility in Fukushima suffered a triple meltdown in 2011.
