'If I’m struggling, I talk the idea through with someone. I seek enrichment beyond my enclosure, mix a cocktail, have a breakdown, experiment on the page, reread the whole thing, start again, retrieve a previously stashed draft from the metaphorical bin, have another breakdown, apologise to everyone I know and then eventually it all works out.'

Alice Slater offers a glimpse at how she tackles the writing process in Issue 106 ✍️

'I mentioned the Mslexia longlisting in my cover letter and it worked like magic. Nearly every agent got back to me straight away asking to see the whole manuscript, and I had four offers of representation by the end of the week.'

Emily Howes went on to win our 2021 Novel Competition, but being longlisted was enough to grab the attention of agents! ⭐

Her novel, The Painters Daughters, was published in February 2024, with Orion in the UK and Simon and Schuster in the US.

If you're not sure if your novel is ready, remember – you've only got to submit the first 5,000 words in the first instance. Those words might change your life 🤍

‘Creative projects are not linear. We think we can show up to the page everyday the same way and write the same number of words, of the same quality, until we are done. But I have never found that to be the case.’

Safiya Robison talks 'Staying Power' and what we can learn about ourselves and our writing process by seeing projects through to completion in Issue 106.

'The creative impulse often feels uncomfortable or disturbing: an itch on your back you can't reach; a restlessness that's not satisfied by a run or a swim; a frightening dream you can't recall that wakes you in the middle of the night...

We can numb it with alcohol and pizza, we can soothe it with meditation and deep breathing, but if we are to write from our hearts we simply have to listen to, and embrace, its beastly essence.'
