A drug driver who caused a serious collision in Chester city centre has now been sentenced.

Matthew Cumpsty appeared at Chester Crown Court on Tuesday 15 July, where he was handed a 12 month community order, including 200 hours community service. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and £114 surcharge.

The 52-year-old, of Oldfield Drive, Great Boughton, had earlier pleaded guilty to drug driving and dangerous driving.

The court heard that at around 6.30am on Tuesday 1 April, Cumpsty was driving a silver Mercedes E-Class on Green Lane in Chester.

As he approached the junction with the A51, Vicars Cross Road, he drove straight through a red light, into the path of a JCB tractor, which had been travelling out of Chester.

The impact of the collision caused the tractor then veer off path, causing the vehicle to crash into homes at the side of the road.

Emergency services attended the scene and on arrival they found that two properties had suffered serious structural damage, but thankfully, there were no reports of any injuries as a result of the incident.

Cumpsty was arrested at the scene after failing a roadside drugs swipe. A toxicology report later reveal that he was over the limit for benzoylecgonine (co***ne) with 65 micrograms per litre of blood, over the limit of 50 micrograms per litre.

CCTV footage recovered from the scene also showed him clearly driving through the red light.

A man who killed a 9-year-old girl after failing to stop at a red traffic light in Halifax has been jailed.

Qadeer Hussain, aged 55, has been sentenced for causing the death of a 9-year-old girl by dangerous driving after a collision on King Cross Street on 8 July 2023.

Alice Williams was taken to hospital with critical injuries and passed away a few days later.

A black Vauxhall Corsa, driven by Qadeer Hussain was travelling along King Cross Street, towards the town centre when the collision occurred.

Hussain of Essex Street, Halifax admitted at Bradford Crown Court in February of this year to causing the death by dangerous driving.

on Friday 2 May 2025, he was sentenced to 8 years and 4 months in prison. He was also disqualified from driving for 10 years and 2 months.

In a statement, Alice’s family said:

"Qadeer Hussain destroyed our daughter Alice and devastated us. We want drivers to look at Alice and think about what can happen when they take risks and drive too fast. We assume that her killer regrets his actions today.

"We are very grateful to all the people who have helped us - the medical staff who tried to save her, the charities who have supported us, the police and witnesses. Their videos proved what he did and we urge anyone who can to please buy a dashcam.

"Lastly, we want our wonderful girl to be known for more than just her tragic, needless death. Alice was ours – a happy, bright bookworm; a funny, loving and gentle daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin and friend. We will always be so proud of her."

Detective Sergeant Steve Suggitt of the Major Collision Enquiry Team said:

"This sentence will not bring Alice back to her family, but I hope it provides a level of closure that Hussain has been prosecuted for his actions. This was a truly tragic incident and our thoughts remain with Alice’s family and those affected by what happened.

"We would like to thank everyone who assisted with our enquiries, including those who provided dash cam footage. This footage was crucial for the investigation team in understanding the movements of the vehicle in the moments leading up to the collision, which helped in securing the charge against Hussain.

"We would also like to thank those who came to Alice’s aid immediately after the collision and we hope that this incident acts as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences families can be left to face and for the need to stay safe on the roads. "

A drink and drug-driver who crashed head-on into a young mum’s car and then claimed to be the victim has been jailed.

Terry Colley, 46, of Swanwick Close, London, was driving erratically on the A22 at Golden Cross on 12 November, 2023, before accelerating and crossing into the path of 29-year-old Sophie, causing her life threatening injuries.

Colley went on to convince a lot of people that he was not to blame for the collision. Denying any responsibility throughout the police investigation, he pleaded not guilty at a hearing at Hove Crown Court in July last year. It wasn’t until the first day of trial on the 22 April, 18 months after the crash, he appeared at Lewes Crown Court and at the last second pleaded guilty to causing serious injury through dangerous driving.

Judge Mooney said that this was the worst case of dangerous driving he had seen, and far from Colley’s guilty plea being a sign of remorse, ‘it was an act of self-preservation and self-pity’, adding: ‘He’s not shown as shred of remorse.’

Tests showed Colley had taken co***ne and had 144 ml of alcohol in his blood. The legal limit is 80mg.

Colley was pulled unconscious from his burning Skoda by witnesses, who no doubt saved his life. His dog, although rescued, sadly died.

Sophie needed to be cut out of her BMW car by fire colleagues and was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Sophie had simply popped out to get some Christmas gifts and treat herself to a coffee that day. She was just 15 minutes from home when Colley crossed into the path of her car at speed.

Sophie said: “Thinking back to before the crash, I remember being the happiest that I’ve ever been – I was in a good job, living with my partner and our 13-month-old baby boy in our own home. We had booked a family holiday. I was outgoing, confident and loving new experiences. My life was complete and I couldn’t ask for more.

“My journey was supposed to only take 15 minutes from my home to the shopping centre. That was until I saw a car travelling fast towards me. I didn’t have a chance to avoid it. The image of the driver’s face is imprinted in my mind and marks the moment my life changed forever.

“Initially I wasn’t responding to treatment for a collapsed lung and because of my extensive injuries my partner and mum were told that there was a real chance I would die. I was put in an induced coma. I felt excruciating pain all over my body when I woke, and when I could speak, I just repeated to my family: “It wasn’t my fault.”

“I’ve had so many operations. I’ve had my spleen removed, and pins were put in my arms, hands, legs, ankles. Another operation will hopefully address the severe pain in my leg.

“My family life has been shattered. I now suffer from PTSD. It’s traumatising that I can’t do any of the things I used to do with my little boy, and my partner has had to give up work to look after us, including our new baby girl.

“I cannot bring myself to drive and being a passenger fills me with absolute dread. I am constantly thinking something is going to happen.

“Our happiness has been taken away from us as a family, owing to this man’s negligence.”

Detective Constable David Symonds said: “Colley was not the victim he claimed to be. He continued blaming Sophie for being on the wrong side of the road despite being shown CCTV evidence to the contrary.

“He cowardly hid behind his lie, convincing a lot of people that he was not to blame, until he pleaded guilty at the very last second at crown court.

“At last, the truth can be revealed that it wasn’t just a crash for her. Sophie can explain the severe impact this has had on her and her family. I hope she can now focus on recovering without this hanging over her.”

Colley pleaded guilty on 22 April and was told he would be sentenced the following day. Colley failed to return to court and was sentenced in his absence to four years’ imprisonment for dangerous driving and given a six-year and one month driving disqualification. Officers located Colley soon after sentencing and escorted him directly to court to begin his sentence.

Colley was also sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for a separate offence after pleading guilty to breach of a non-molestation order in relation to a former partner. He was given a 15-year restraining order and ordered to pay a victim surcharge.

A man from Swansea has been jailed after he flipped his vehicle twice when performing a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre and then drove off.

20-year-old Danail Angelov, from Townhill, attempted to overtake a vehicle in close proximity to road humps with a taxi passing in the opposite direction at the same time. Angelov’s vehicle collided with both other vehicles, with the impact forcing the car Angelov was overtaking to collide with a garden wall.

Angelov pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle-taking, failing to stop after a road accident, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

He has been sentenced to 14 months in prison.

Sergeant Robert Richards said:

“Danail Angelov could have injured a number of people with his reckless and dangerous actions. The taxi driver, who was just going about his daily business, had to attend hospital to be inspected for whiplash and concussion.

“There was also a child pedestrian walking on the pavement at the time of the collision, and it is a miracle that one of the three vehicles didn’t end up striking them and causing them serious injury.

“The fact that Danail Angelov then drove off from the scene is a sad indictment of his character.

“It is only right that he goes to prison.”

A dangerous driver has been jailed after a man was seriously injured in Solihull.

On 29 November 2023, there was a collision at the junction of Bills Lane and Shakespeare Drive in Shirley involving two cars.

Richard Perrin was driving a white Toyota when he hit a van before driving off.

Due to traffic, the victim managed to catch up with Perrin and got out of his van to ask Perrin why he had failed to stop.

Perrin told the victim that he didn’t realise he had hit his car. But as the victim tried to exchange details, Perrin drove over him, dragging him several feet up the road before he was released.

The 58-year-old drove off leaving the victim seriously injured in the middle of a busy road.

The 29-year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries which he is still recovering from to this day.

Officers spoke to a number of people who had witnessed Perrin’s dangerous driving. They also viewed CCTV and dash-cam footage and identified Perrin’s vehicle.

He was arrested from his home where officers also noted the damage to the front of his car and a handprint on the bonnet.

Perrin of Whittle Road, Solihull, admitted to causing serious injury by dangerous driving at an earlier hearing and at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday 6 March 25 he was sentenced to three years in prison.

He’s also been disqualified from driving for four-and-a-half years and must pass an extended re-test if he wishes to get his licence back.

Acting Detective Sergeant Lana Payne from Solihull Police, said: “This was a traumatic incident that the victim continues to recover from and he has also been unable to return to work.

“Had Perrin stopped at the scene initially, this would never have happened. I want to say thank you to the members of the public who helped the victim and assisted us with our investigation.

“Road safety continues to be a priority for us. We actively patrol key areas to enforce speed limits and protect our communities from road harm issues. But we cannot do this alone.

“We urge all road users to respect the speed limit and be aware of other drivers and pedestrians. Let’s work together to keep our roads safe.”

A 28-year-old man from Wrexham has been sentenced after pleading guilty to a number of driving offences in Chester City Centre.

Lewellyn Parry-Jones from Borras Hall Lane, Llan Pwll, Wrexham appeared at Chester Crown Court on 2 June to be sentenced after pleading guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, obstructing a constable, drink driving, public order and possession of cannabis.

He was sentenced to 19 months in prison, and banned from driving for three years, nine months and 14 days. He also has to take an extended test.

The court heard that at 12.05pm on Saturday 3 May, police were made aware that a white Vauxhall Combo van was being driven in the Chester area by a disqualified driver who was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.

At 12:40pm onwards local authority CCTV shows the van being driven around the city centre tailgating other cars. He turned left toward Grosvenor Park Road and collided with a pedestrian.

On Grosvenor Park Road he increased speed significantly and crossed into the second lane. He went onto Vicars Lane toward Pepper Street on the wrong side of the road overtaking four stationary cars toward oncoming traffic before cutting in front of the fourth vehicle.

He then went on from Pepper Street onto Bridge Street where he turned right across the front of oncoming traffic at a crossroad junction.

An officer spotted Parry-Jones driving along Pepper Street as it headed toward the Bridge Street area.

Two officers attempted to bring the van to a stop, but Parry-Jones deliberately reversed into the front of one of the vehicles before driving forward and attempting to flee through the bollards onto the pedestrianised area of the shopping precinct.

The van couldn’t get through the bollards, but he did collide with a bicycle in a bike rack causing damage.

When the two officers went to arrest Parry-Jones he was physically and verbally aggressive and appeared to be intoxicated. He tried to punch one of the officers but they managed to safely restrain him. They then found cannabis in his coat following a search.

Llewellyn Parry-Jones, was later charged with dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, resisting arrest, drink driving, use of threatening behaviour without intent and possession of class B drugs (cannabis).

PC David Smith said:

“His erratic driving around Chester City Centre while intoxicated was incomprehensible. The city centre was busy with vehicles and pedestrians at the time. His behaviour was reckless and could have caused a serious of even fatal incident.

“When we were able to bring him to a stop safely, he tried to evade capture causing damage to our police vehicles and tried to assault officers. His behaviour was idiotic and dangerous and now he is paying the consequences.”

A man who committed drug dealing and driving offences and then ran from police has been sent to jail.

Nathaniel Cummings, aged 21, of Adamsdown, Cardiff pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply co***ne and possessing criminal property at Cardiff Magistrates court on Thursday May1, 2025.

He was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday, June 5, 2025 to three years and four months in prison, and banned from driving for one year.

This followed an incident on Wednesday June 12, 2024, when officers sighted a BMW 1-series that was stopped for a routine check on Palmerston Road at the junction with Cardiff Road in Barry. When officers exited their car to speak to Cummings, he drove the car deliberately at them, narrowly avoiding them before driving off.

Following a short pursuit through Barry, Cummings came to a stop in Churchfields where he and two passengers fled the car and tried to hide in a nearby hedge. With the help of the police helicopter and police dog units, all three were located and arrested.

During a search of the car officers found over £1,600 stored in the central armrest and 24 seal bags of co***ne.

DC Pughsley said:

“Nathaniel Cummings showed complete disregard for the safety of other road users and our officers during the pursuit. Driving in such a manner can have disastrous consequences.

"I hope this sentence sends out a strong message, that it is never acceptable to drive in such a manner and that we are always on patrol and could be anywhere”

A personal trainer has been sentenced to 14 months behind bars for causing a crash that injured seven police officers during a pursuit.

Mazyar Azarbonyad, 20, who was on a first date at the time and has never held a full driving licence, admitted dangerous driving following the crash on the A1 in Newcastle on 9 April.

With the woman in the passenger seat of a BMW, he evaded police who had tried to pull him over for a defective light in the Swalwell area of Gateshead. Reaching speeds of over 100mph, he drove on to the A1 where the major collision happened at junction 75 near the Denton roundabout.

Five police vehicles were badly damaged and some officers had to be cut from the car. Seven were taken to hospital and prosecutor Jolyon Perks said it was "truly remarkable" they did not suffer serious injuries. The road was closed for most of the day causing "traffic chaos" across Tyneside.

He also admitted two counts of failing to stop, driving without a licence and insurance.

After he was released on police bail following the A1 incident, he continued to drive from Stanley, County Durham, to a Newcastle city centre gym where he worked and police spotted him filling up his car on a garage forecourt.

Azarbonyad faced further offences of driving without insurance or a licence on April 16, seven days after the crash.

He will serve his sentence in a young offenders institute as the prosecution said he was at "high risk of exploitation." The judge said he would be expected to serve 40% of his sentence.

Azarbonyad will also receive a three year driving ban which will begin when he is released.
