Newcastle United begin the defence of their trophy as League One leaders Bradford City come to Tyneside in the third round.

The holders will rotate, but the test will be real – Bradford are flying high and dreaming of a cup upset. Howe’s side must show quality and focus if they’re to progress.

⚫⚪ What we learned vs Barcelona 🔴💛

Under the European lights at St James’ Park, Newcastle proved something this week: they belong.

From Gordon’s missed chances to Elanga’s electric running, from Schär’s injury and defensive slip-ups to midfield beasts Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali holding through pressure, the night was full of promise, and full of lessons.

It may’ve finished 2-1, but the performance confirmed we’re not just visiting Europe’s top table. We’re settling in.

⚫⚪ Newcastle United 1–2 Barcelona 🔴💛

What a night at St James’ Park. The anthem, the roar, the flags — a true Champions League cauldron.

Newcastle flew out of the traps, with Elanga electric down the right and big chances for Gordon and Barnes that went begging. In the end, Rashford’s double punished fine lapses before Gordon struck late to spark hope of a grandstand finish.

It wasn’t to be, but this was another reminder: Newcastle truly belong on this stage.

Big Nick Energy ⚫⚪🔥 | Newcastle United 1–0 Wolves 🐺

Relief at St James’ Park as Newcastle finally got their first league win of the season. A sharper, hungrier performance than the sluggish Leeds display, and just what Eddie Howe needed before Barcelona midweek

But the story was all about Big Nick. Woltemade wasn’t even meant to start. He came in because of Wissa’s injury 🚑, burdened by a £69m fee and Isak comparisons 🇸🇪, yet answered every question with a bullet header on 29 minutes 🧠⚽. His all-round display oozed confidence and composure exactly what you want from a record signing.

Tonali ran the show 💪, rattling the post 🚀. Pope’s early saves kept us alive 🧤. Schär and Burn were ice-cool at the back ❄️. The numbers backed it up too: 57% possession 📊, 16 shots to Wolves’ 8 🎯, xG 1.5 to 0.53.
