Newcastle United begin the defence of their trophy as League One leaders Bradford City come to Tyneside in the third round.

⚫⚪ What we learned vs Barcelona 🔴💛

Under the European lights at St James’ Park, Newcastle proved something this week: they belong.

From Gordon’s missed chances to Elanga’s electric running, from Schär’s injury and defensive slip-ups to midfield beasts Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali holding through pressure, the night was full of promise, and full of lessons.

It may’ve finished 2-1, but the performance confirmed we’re not just visiting Europe’s top table. We’re settling in.

⚫⚪ Newcastle United 1–2 Barcelona 🔴💛

What a night at St James’ Park. The anthem, the roar, the flags — a true Champions League cauldron.

Newcastle flew out of the traps, with Elanga electric down the right and big chances for Gordon and Barnes that went begging. In the end, Rashford’s double punished fine lapses before Gordon struck late to spark hope of a grandstand finish.

It wasn’t to be, but this was another reminder: Newcastle truly belong on this stage.

Barcelona come to St James’ Park and it promises to be another magical European night. Howe says there’s “a lot of confidence restored” after the weekend win, but he knows Barça’s “pace in wide areas” and “free-scoring” attack will test Newcastle’s defensive steel.
