How many places are there to eat and drink inside Fenwick Newcastle?!

It’s easy to think of Fenwick as somewhere to shop, but you could genuinely spend the whole day eating your way around the store. Here’s the current list:

1. Mother Mercy – cocktails, Champagne and their Cocktails & Cake afternoon tea
2. Caffè Nero – coffee, cakes and quick bites
3. Café Filto – speciality coffee, matcha, brunch, lunch and cocktails
4. Nero Express – coffee and pastries on the go
5. EL&N London – brunch, lunch, cakes, pastries and speciality coffee
6. Ouseburn Coffee Company – local speciality coffee roasted in Newcastle.
7. Mason + Rye – cakes, pastries, coffee and light bites
8. Porterhouse Butcher & Grill – steaks and other meat dishes cooked right inside the Food Hall
9. Saltwater Fish Company – oysters, seafood and fresh fish, with its own fishmonger alongside it
10. Fuego – tapas, charcuterie, Napoli-style pizza and wine
11. Brunswick Champagne Bar – V***e Clicquot Champagne with small plates and snacks
12. The Terrace – family-friendly lunches, salads, smoothies and light bites
13. Hopscotch Play Café – family café alongside the children’s play area
14. Colmans – proper fish and chips from the South Shields institution
15. Café 21 – bistro-style lunches, classics and cakes
16. Roof Thirty Nine – Fenwick’s rooftop spot for Mediterranean food, sharing plates and cocktails

And that’s all under ONE roof on Northumberland Street.

I definitely haven’t tried them all yet… so which one needs to be next?

🎭 OTHELLO at Northern Stage | AD press invite

My first experience of Shakespeare on stage, and what an introduction!

We went to see Othello at Northern Stage in Newcastle, a new production directed by Anthony Almeida that transports Shakespeare’s tragedy to 1980s Britain, against the backdrop of the Falklands War.

The story follows Othello, a respected military commander whose marriage to Desdemona begins to unravel as Iago carefully plants the seeds of jealousy, suspicion and mistrust.

I’ll admit, I was slightly apprehensive about seeing Shakespeare for the first time. Although this production has a modern setting, it retains Shakespeare’s language, and I wondered how much of it I would understand.

And yes, there were moments when I struggled to follow every word. But what surprised me was how little that mattered. The performances were so expressive, the emotions so convincing and the tension so carefully built that I found myself completely engrossed in the story.

Dwane Walcott delivers a powerful performance as Othello, alongside Maanuv Thiara as the manipulative Iago and Phoebe Smyth as Desdemona.

The production design was another highlight. Striking set, combined with atmospheric lighting, sound and video, creates an increasingly unsettling environment as the tragedy unfolds.

At approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes, including an interval, this is a substantial production, but one that held our attention throughout.

We thoroughly enjoyed it. For anyone who, like me, has been curious about Shakespeare but felt a little intimidated by the language, this production shows just how much powerful acting and visual storytelling can communicate.

AD| Newcastle’s newest foodie spot has opened!

We were invited along to the opening of GOODS. on Northumberland Road, and there’s quite a lot going on under one roof!

It’s a new food and wellness concept combining an all-day kitchen, organic grocery shop, juice bar and speciality coffee spot. You can pop in for breakfast or lunch, pick up fresh produce and everyday essentials, or grab something sweet.

They’re also working with some brilliant local independents, including Ouseburn Coffee Company, Adam’s Bakehouse and Katherine’s Florist.

Naturally, we headed straight for the treats! 😂

I tried the Greek frozen yoghurt topped with blueberries, strawberries and gummy bears, which was delicious. We also had a coffee from Ouseburn Coffee Company and a blackberry doughnut from Adam’s Bakehouse. That doughnut was SO good!

We left it a little late for the puffin party… but the Farne Islands were still 100% worth the trip 🐧🌊

We headed out from Seahouses with Serenity Farne Island Boat Tours for a cruise around the Farne Islands, and it’s such a beautiful way to see this part of the Northumberland coast.

If puffins are your priority, April to late July is the best time to go. By the time we went, most had already headed back out to sea, although we were lucky enough to spot a few stragglers bobbing around on the water.

And there was still plenty to see. We spotted lots of other seabirds and some grey seals too, which was so cute.

Even without the huge numbers of puffins, I’d still really recommend the trip. The scenery, wildlife and views of the islands from the water made it such a beautiful experience.

Next time though… I’m booking earlier 😂

Good luck to everyone taking on the Great North Run tomorrow! 🏃‍♀️❤️

Honestly, you are all amazing for even getting yourselves to that start line. It’s such a brilliant day and there really is nothing quite like the support you get all the way from Newcastle to South Shields.

I’ve added a couple of throwbacks of me doing it in 2015 and 2017… mainly as proof that if it’s your first Great North Run and I managed to get round twice, you are going to be absolutely fine 😂

Enjoy the atmosphere, take it all in and remember how big an achievement it is.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! 🙌

Self-serve wine… future or fad? 🍷

I tried it at Say When in Gosforth and I’m firmly in the “I get it” camp.

I really like being able to take my time looking through the wines without feeling rushed into choosing, and the fact you can pick how much you want including 50ml tasting measures is probably my favourite part because you could easily choose a few different wines and make your own little wine flight.

We’re starting to see self-serve wine bars pop up more often now, and I can see why. It makes trying something new feel much easier, especially if you don’t want to commit to a full glass.

But what do you think… self-serve wine: future or fad? 🍷

Have you been to newest location at yet. It has taken over the front left of Flannels and the matcha was fantastic. I fits into the sleekness of Flannels very well.

New Greek Bakery opened on Clayton Road this summer from the same family behind New Greek in Heaton. They bring Greek pastries, pies and desserts alongside Greek coffee to Jesmond.

I absolutely love Greece, so I will always gravitate towards a Greek bakery, and I’m very happy they seem to be getting more popular around Newcastle!

I went for the cream bougatsa: crisp filo pastry filled with warm semolina custard, finished with icing sugar and cinnamon. It was delicious… but HUGE. Half of it came home with me 😂

It is a beautiful bakery and cafe with plenty of seating to sit and enjoy all the treats.
