The United States Coast Guard's birthday is on August 4th, and in 2025 it will be the 235th birthday of the organization. The Coast Guard was established in 1790 when Congress authorized the construction of 10 cutter sailing vessels to patrol the coastline, enforce tariffs, and prevent smuggling. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton lobbied for the funding, which was signed into law by President George Washington as the Tariff Act. The fleet was originally called the Revenue-Marine, but was later renamed the Revenue Cutter Service, which is considered the predecessor to today's Coast Guard.

Here’s a good read about the 1964 earthquake in Alaska that caused a tsunami on the Oregon coast.

Friday, March 27th, 1964 was a warm, sunny day on the North Oregon Coast. Anyone listening to the radio or watching TV around 7 p.m. that night had the normal

We will rebuild! The tsunami wasn’t the real threat yesterday, the main concern was the rip currents and sneaker waves sweeping people out to sea. A 1 ft rise to normal tidal height can cause significant flooding and damage to surrounding area along the bays and rivers near ocean waters. The 8.8 earthquake off the coast of Russia was the 6th largest ever recorded on paper. So you can see the hype this caused to warn people. Glad you’re all safe and go out and enjoy the sunny beach weather!

At around 4pm today, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake occurred off the shore of Russia. Tsunami warnings have now been issued for the entire Pacific coast. So what should you do to prepare you and your family for a potential tsunami?

1️⃣ If you live in a tsunami hazard zone, make a plan to stay safe and know what signs to look for.

2️⃣ Understand the types of alerts that you may receive and what to do.
- A tsunami watch means to be aware as one is possible. Be ready to take action quickly if needed.
- A tsunami advisory means take action as one is expected or occurring. Stay out of the water and away from beaches and waterways. Follow instructions from local officials.
- A tsunami warning means there is danger, and you need to take immediate action. Move to high ground or inland away from the water as widespread flooding is expected or occurring. Dangerous conditions could continue for several hours or days.

3️⃣ Evacuate immediately if you receive an official tsunami warning or detect the natural signs of a tsunami. Get to higher ground as far inland as possible.

4️⃣ Download the free Red Cross Emergency app for real-time alerts, open shelter locations and expert advice in both English and Spanish.

The Tsunami Watch has been changed to a Tsunami Advisory. Tsunami waves can be expected between 1140 pm and 1155 pm.

Wave Heights on Long Beach, WA are expected to be less than a foot.

Wave Heights at Seaside and Newport are not yet available, but expect strong currents and dangerous waves along the Pacific Coast.

While tempting, do not go to the coast to watch waves coming in. Currents can be unpredictable and it will be dark out.

Tsunami Evacuation Zones are readily available at: https://nvs.nanoos.org/TsunamiEvac
