It’s a very wet morning as a band of heavy rain has crossed the country which will soon clear the north coast but there are more heavy showers moving in from the west which will track eastward through the day and during this evening. It’s going to be a little cooler with temperatures averaging 15C in a blustery southwesterly wind. Some gaps in the cloud will allow the sun to break through at times and there is an increased risk of thunderstorms developing. Be careful on the roads.

Unfortunately the good spell of weather has come to an end as low pressure closes in on Saturday morning bringing rain from the Atlantic which will move in from the west early in the morning and will track eastward spreading to all counties by lunchtime. There will be a brief clearance with some sunshine breaking through during the afternoon but a more persistent, possibly squally band of heavy rain will affect the northern half of the country on Saturday night with some thunderstorms likely. Saturdays temperatures will average 18C in a light southerly wind.

It’s back to rain and lower temperatures from tomorrow as low pressure moves in and it’s set to be quite unsettled for at least another ten days. The meteorological summer starts on Monday but there’s no sign of any big improvement yet.

A large cell is slowly moving up the Irish Sea in a northerly direction which could move east towards Carlingford Lough this evening bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms. The lightning detectors are picking up a lot of activity within this cell and a few strikes inland. Hopefully it stays away .
