Tontena Studio

Tontena Studio Helping artists to develop and release their music creativity through agreed projects. Tontena Studio does not operate commercially.

It doesn't proclaim to be 'state of the art’ but it does have an extensive range of A-Class sound processing equipment. It also has a fine array of modern/vintage musical instruments, amps, and effects. Keys: Yamaha baby-grand (acoustic), Wurlitzer 200A (vintage electric), Triton Pro-X, Roland Fantom X6, Moog and Korg mini synths and vocoders. Care has been taken over its selection of classic valv

e and industry-standard condenser/dynamic/ribbon microphones. Recording: Extensive digital hard drive multitracking (256 virtual tracking), analogue tape (16 tracks) and digital/analogue stereo mastering. Mixing: Digital (32 channel 'flying fader' automation) and analogue (42 channel with midi recall). Outboard processing (mainly valve) is via Neve/Oram/Avalon/Focusrite/TLA/Lexicon etc.

Recording projects:

The studio is a pleasant and creative environment in which invited songwriters and musicians can work at their own pace, without time restraints, on mutually agreed Tontena Music projects. Visiting artists have remarked that Tontena Studio is a place in which they feel confident all things are possible.

The studio has an extensive range of outboard A-Class high-end tube and solid state audio processing equipment. It also has a fine array of acoustic and electronic musical instruments which include pianos, guitars, synths, drums/percussion and a variety of effects pedals and gizmos. Guitar amplification is by Vox, Fender, Marshall, Ampeg, Peavey and Carlsbro. There is also an assortment of amp/speaker modelling and fx units.

Digital recording can be via a full Avid Pro Tools 11 Native TB Core system (with Avid 16x16 HD I/O) or via 32 track/32 channel D32XD recorder. The latter features real-time 'flying fader' automation, full analogue compression on all input channels, ADAT connectivity, plus a comprehensive on-board editing and mastering suite.

Analogue recording is via a Tascam MS-16 track ‘reel to reel’ recorder (1" tape) with x2 banks of switchable DX-8DS (16 channels) noise reduction. The option to mix-down to a Studer Revox PR99mk3 recorder (1/4" tape running at 15ips) is also available for mastering, track bouncing, vari-speed pitch adjustment or, if desired, to apply a hint of natural ‘tape compression’ to a previously digitally recorded signal.
