Instead of buying more tools or toys for myself, I took some of the money this channel has earned and went shopping for local families who are struggling this Christmas.

We headed into Asda with the donation list and loaded up the trolley with:

šŸŽ® Toys & games (Lego, toy cars, kids’ bits)
šŸ« Biscuits, chocolates & treats (because it’s not Christmas without them)
ā˜• Yorkshire Tea & nice coffee
🧓 Everyday essentials – toothpaste, toothbrushes, shower gel, etc.

I slipped up, owned it, and fixed it—fast. Needed a double back box, dug through a chaotic van, and avoided drilling the chimney breast (no ā€œsmoke = fireā€ false alarms). Went adhesive-only (CT1) for a clean, solid fit where fixings aren’t ideal. Lesson: keep spares, keep calm, and choose the right method for the wall you’ve got.

Still jamming a screwdriver into switch screw caps? Try this clean, scratch-free tape trick. Quick demo shows the right tape, angle, and pull so you don’t gouge plates or split caps. Perfect for call-outs and snagging.

One fitting dead, one the wrong colour. In this quick job I:

Test the PIR/photocell and lamp to find the real fault (it’s the GU10).

Swap the lamp and set the new fitting’s CCT switch to 4000K so all lights match.

Great for getting busy, terrible for margins. Here’s why agency jobs rarely pay, how loyalty vanishes the moment you take a week off, and what to do instead: build direct leads with Google Business Profile + local SEO so customers call you, not a middleman.

Most Electricians Get This Wrong When Starting Out…

When you first go self-employed, the hardest part isn’t the work.
It’s:
• Pricing confidently
• Talking to customers
• Knowing what to charge
• Not getting pushed around
• Running the business side properly

In this podcast, I break down EXACTLY how I:
⚔ Quote
⚔ Do the job
⚔ Invoice
⚔ Get paid
⚔ Keep customers for life
(Real jobs, real examples.)

QUESTION:
šŸ‘‰ Would you rather charge day rate or fixed price?
(I explain what I do — and why — inside the episode.)

If you call a tradesman in an emergency and they fix it, pay them. Cash? Bank transfer? Fine—just communicate and settle it promptly. Ghosting invoices guarantees one thing: next time you’re stuck, you’ll wait… or they won’t come.

🌱 From 1 Little Job to a Shed Load of Work

In the podcast I share real stories like:

A small conservatory job that led to church rectories and loads of maintenance work

Old mates from the pub days turning into big-spending customers

How builders, gardeners, painters & groundworkers quietly keep my diary full

If you rely just on Facebook ads or ā€œhope,ā€ you’re missing a trick.
This is all about relationships that pay you for years.

ā“Question for you (answer’s in the podcast):
Which trade ended up sending me a huge amount of ongoing work from church rectories and maintenance jobs?

I'm starting up on my own - I'm going to be RICH!

Yes we have all been there. Being your own boss and having your own business is the way to go. It's exciting and the only way to become rich.

I would say there are still a few lessons to learn……..

How did you feel when you first started to train as an electrician?

Well this is going to be similar to that, it's another step to own your own business.

Customer skills and how to quote for jobs is not really taught at college. You learn how to do the job safely and professionally - How to get the job in the first place is what you need to know when self employed.

In this podcast, this is just what I talk about.

The simple mistakes once made and how I overcome them to carry on and become a successful business owner of my own.
