"Struggling Author!"
I'm sure that you have heard this saying before. Do you know why it came about though?
An author usually takes two years or more, sat in a chair, square bum, square eyes, creating a Manuscript to share with the world. This costs hundreds of hours of electricity, often discomfort, but nevertheless "excitement" that those who may read the book will glean something they like, or something that might make them happy, healthier, or more knowledgeable.
The Printers charge, for example here only, say £4 to print the book (adding separate Catalogue and other costs!)
The Reader pays £10 for it.
The Bookseller wants up to 55% of the price just to sell it! That means £5.50 to the shop or on-line shop, £4 for the Printer leaving just £0.50p for the hardest worker of all, the Author!
The Writer has to pay c.£175 for ISBN numbers. Electricity Bills, a PC, any Software needed and possible an expensive DTP Package which will be the only one able to create the files that the Printer needs! Then their are other charges made for Files/Catalogues/etc.
This is where the term "Struggling Author" comes from, as he or she will need to sell well over 2,000 books just to break even.
Please, please, consider the struggling author, and don't share books, or donate them to a charity shop. Buy, read, keep. Many are worth a second read, later in life.
