Seriously ill solo sailor rescued by helicopter.

The sea rescuers of the stations Deutsche Bucht/Helgoland and Hooksiel of the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Persons (DGzRS) were deployed yesterday, July 27, 2026, together with the Federal Police Sea and a helicopter from NHC Northern Helicopter for a seriously ill single-handed sailor.

The German Federal Police patrol boat "Bad Düben" was located approximately 20 nautical miles northwest of Hooksiel, near the Elbe approach, at around 1:15 p.m. The crew became aware of a sailing yacht due to its erratic behavior and conducted an inspection.

Two federal police officers used the dinghy of the "Bad Düben" to transfer to the 14-meter sailing yacht. On board, they found an elderly sailor who urgently needed hospital treatment.

The maritime rescue coordination center operated by the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) immediately alerted a helicopter from NHC Northern Helicopter and the HERMANN MARWEDE, a sea rescue cruiser stationed on Heligoland. The HERMANN MARWEDE took on board an emergency physician, who is also a volunteer sea rescuer, and immediately set sail.

At the same time, the helicopter "Northern Rescue 01" took off and arrived on site shortly after 2 p.m. It hoisted the sailor from the sailing yacht using a winch.

In the meantime, the maritime rescue coordination center had also called in the sea rescue cruiser BERNHARD GRUBEN from the Hooksiel station. The HERMANN MARWEDE's daughter boat VERENA brought a sea rescuer to the yacht and picked up another sea rescuer from the BERNHARD GRUBEN. They then brought the vessel, equipped with provisions and additional safety equipment, safely to Hooksiel, almost twenty nautical miles away.

The solo sailor was flown to the hospital by helicopter.

Double Solo Ocean Crossings - 60 years apart!
First aged 23, then again aged 83, what a sailor!

On a Sunday morning in August 1962, a tiny black plywood sailboat slipped under the Golden Gate Bridge.

Nobody was expecting it.

At the tiller was Kenichi Horie, 23, from Osaka — and he had just sailed alone across the entire Pacific Ocean.

94 days. 5,000 miles. A boat 19 feet long, about the length of a pickup truck.

San Francisco police arrested him on the spot.

Horie had spent his teens obsessively studying winds, navigation, and meteorology, then handed a shipwright his own specifications and had the Mermaid built.

Japan refused him a passport — no one had ever tried to leave the country in a boat that small, so there was no rule for it.

He got no foreign currency either.

He left Nishinomiya harbor anyway on May 12, 1962, with no official clearance.

On board: rice, water, b**r, about 200 cans of food, a radio, and some books.

He hid whenever another ship came near, because he had no papers.

He sailed through a typhoon and five separate storms, bailing water out of the hull until he was throwing up from seasickness.

Sharks circled the boat. A pod of whales kept him company for a while.

The loneliness got so bad he began talking to another person he kept seeing on deck — a person who was not there.

He later titled his book "Kodoku," the Japanese word for desperate loneliness.

Then San Francisco locked him up for arriving without a passport or a dollar.

Mayor George Christopher heard the story, had him released, handed him a 30-day visa, and gave him the key to the city.

Back in Japan, the same officials who had refused him a passport suddenly called him a national hero.

In his book, he explained the whole thing in one line: "I crossed it because I wanted to."

The Mermaid still sits in the San Francisco Maritime Museum.

Sixty years later, at 83, he sailed out of that same harbor and did it again in reverse — 69 days, the last three of them fighting a tide that kept pushing him back from Japan.

"I just crossed the finish line. I'm tired," he wrote in his blog on June 4, 2022, now the oldest person ever to cross the Pacific solo and nonstop.

Juan José Mutilba, a 66-year-old business owner from the city of Burgos, went missing on Tuesday, 18 August, when he fell overboard from the sailing boat on which he was travelling with his wife between Syracuse, in Sicily, and Pylos (Greece).

According to their son, Sergio, who spoke from Greece, Mutilba and his wife were on holiday.

They set out on Monday, 17 August, and "everything was going well". On Tuesday, Juan José caught a tuna and, while cleaning the blood from the fish off the boat, he fell into the water
