Bruce Maunsell's 27-month, 25,000 nm solo Pacific loop was never about the destinations.

It was about being with his boat, the sea and time.

It was also about staying alive.

Mid-North Pacific, his prop seal failed and 1.5 liters per minute of seawater leaked into the bilge. The engine was unreliable and solar production was too limited to help run the bilge pumps. He crammed himself into an 18"x15" bilge space and fixed it in the dark with water pouring in his face.

Then he sat down and had a rum.

When asked why he always sails alone, a well-known character of YouTube fame who notoriously sails in the far north, often in severe weather, once replied: ‘Whenever the sailing got tough and I began to enjoy myself, my crew became sick and wanted to go into harbour. I rather sail alone!’ That.....

Another reminder for Short or Single-handed compatriots.

This time losing the mast ahead on Storm Dave.

Mastbrott i stormens efterdyningar
 
Kl. 19.47 kommer larm från Sjö- och flygräddningscentralen om en segelbåt med mastbrott.
 
RS Grönhögen och RS Bergkvara lämnar kaj med två räddningsbåtar och sätter kurs mot positionen.
 
Det är mörkt och efterdyningarna från stormen Dave ger vågor på upp mot två meter.
 
Efter knappt en timme är sjöräddarna framme. Besättningen är oskadd. Med tanke på förhållandena bedöms det för riskabelt att kliva ombord och kapa masten. I stället fattas beslut om att bogsera med masten hängandes längs styrbord sida.
 
Båten kopplas upp och bogseras genom sjön till en säker plats.
 
Strax efter 22.15 är uppdraget avslutat och sjöräddarna återvänder till station.

𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗼, 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱‑𝘁𝗵𝗲‑𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗨𝗦 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝘂𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗕𝗼𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗮𝗰𝗵𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝘂𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮.

Guy made it safely ashore.

Spirit did not. A fifteen‑foot breach tore through the port side — a total loss by most standards.
But what followed was nearly a year of rebuild, resolve and steady determination.

By July 2023, Spirit was sailing once again.
Four years on, both sailor and boat are preparing to re‑enter the Golden Globe Race — a return few would attempt after a shipwreck.

This Wednesday, 1 April, we spend time live with Guy deBoer to explore the mindset, the seamanship, and the determination behind that comeback.
