Leonidas

Leonidas Analogue Producer & Audiophile Partyman Leonidas subsequently collaborated on 2 further vinyl EPs (Synqlock Vol I & II) with Kay Suzuki, to wide acclaim.

After 10 years of building his analogue studio and honing his craft, Leonidas debuted with “Sequential EP” in 2012 on his friend Kay Suzuki’s Round In Motion label, to acclaim from a broad range of musicians and DJs, from Manuel Gottsching to Theo Parrish and DJ Harvey (who included “Interstellar Vibrations” in his “The Sound Of Mercury Rising Vol 2” compilation in September 2019). His collaborati

ons with close friend and Edinburgh label owner Hobbes have yielded 4 vinyl EPs (including Machines, Tapes & Electronic Setups and Mo Machines), while their 3rd (The Rags of Time EP) spawned the underground Balearic disco classic “Web of Intrigue” - voted no 1 in Bill Brewster’s Furtive top 50 original tracks of 2017 DJ poll. Their 4th EP (Aranath) released in April 2021 garnered support from the likes of Brewster, Justin Robertson and Kenneth Bager, with Gideon Coe playing “Web Of Intrigue (Long Haul Mix)" on BBC 6 Music twice in January 2021, and Nemone playing it on the breakfast show in April ‘21. Leonidas & Hobbes were previously commissioned by the Pet Shop Boys to deliver 3 (unreleased) remixes of "Vocal" in 2013, and have featured on another 2 remixes on Hobbes Music. Leonidas gained 3 further remix credits in 2018/19, on Stupid Human Records, Innsbruck’s Mont Lake Records and Portuguese house label Percebes. Another project, with long term friend and collaborator Jpye (Twonk & Friends: “L’Orient”) received a digital release on Balearic label Eclectics in 2019. Leonidas co-wrote and co-produced 2 tracks on Jpye's debut album "Samba With You" on Claremont 56, released in May 2021, one of which ("Oui, Non" a collaboration with singer-songwriter E113) was also featured on "Claremont Editions Vol 2" in November 2020. In June 2020 Leonidas was inspired by Bob James's YouTube video "Black Lives Matter To Me" to create "Love For Black Lives" with his friend U:Guru providing sax and brass arrangement. The track was entered into a competition on Francois Kevorkian's "World of Echoes" page, which it subsequently won, gaining support along the way from Bill Brewster, Ashley Beedle and Phil Mison, among others. "Love For Black Lives", alongside “Dub for Black Lives” and “Ambient Reprise” are available at lovetoparty.bandcamp.com

Leonidas is currently working on material for 2 albums, the debut album by Leonidas & Hobbes plus his own solo album “August Moon”, both of which will include collaborations with musicians, singers and songwriters, including E113, Leo's partner Joanne and U:Guru, among others. Twilight, taken from August Moon is now available on Leo’s bandcamp.

Good morning dear friends and Happy Friday!

It is with great pleasure and excitement that Andrew Hobbes Richardson and I can announce the 6th Leonidas & Hobbes “Together” EP, the 31st release on Hobbes Music!

Hot off the back of the 12 year anniversary of the Edinburgh label (our first EP was the 2nd release), and 1 year after our first album, it marks a significant milestone for us as friends and musical collaborators.

Last year’s album Pockets of Light was conceived and recorded during COVID, and as such was a deeply personal and introspective work, not least because it coincided with parenthood and domestic breakups for each of us.

Together is much more of a celebration and a defiant statement of intent. Musically, it borrows the layered, experimental textures and sounds from the album and transposes them to varying moods on a dance-floor or after-party.

The artwork, "A night at the Co-op" by our friend Clara Johanssen perfectly expresses the spirit of the music.

After 30 years of friendship, trials and tribulations, partying, DJing and throwing parties together, and close to 15 years of working/experimenting on music/record production, we genuinely feel that this is our most accomplished work.

My music production/remix path has taken me via the legendary Sigma Studios, founded in 1968 in Philadelphia and responsible for countless RnB and disco classics.

From 1977 through 1988, Sigma also operated a studio in New York, where a who's who of 80s artists recorded an equally impressive array of dancefloor-friendly songs.

One of these was Madonna's Holiday, where the Material Girl and Jellybean Benitez were joined by unsung hero and keyboard player Fred Zarr (credited for keys on "Out Come The Freaks", "I'll Do Anything for You", "Walking On Sunshine", "I.O.U." and "Love Will Save The Day").

Zarr programmed additional drums for Holiday on his Oberheim DMX (replacing some of the Linn drums programmed by Jellybean and Madonna in the original demo). He also added a layer of Moog bass to the bass guitar (it's the "growl" you can hear), all the synth parts/riffs and of course *that* acoustic piano solo.

Sigma Sounds Studios, utilised a combination of tape delay and an EMT plate. I've done my best to emulate the sound, alongside some of my beloved Lexicon reverbs, while tweaking the low end, and, of course, removing some parts and emphasising others.

If you've ever wanted an instrumental or dub mix of Holiday, or wondered if there's more of the piano solo, then you've come to the right place 🙂

"Free/pay what you want" link to all versions in the comments, below.

Respectfully updated vocal, dub and instrumental mixes of Holiday (+bonus beats) with a disco break and Fred Zarr's original piano solo in its entirety, available here: https://lovetoparty.bandcamp.co
