While the Yoruba people continue their relentless struggle for the disintegration of the 1914 Amalgamation—an ill-fated union that forcibly merged the Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba into one nation—the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), under the courageous leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, face oppression and silencing at the hands of the Nigerian government. The systematic manipulation of the judicial system to convict Mazi Nnamdi Kanu of a crime he did not commit will not erase the undeniable truth that these three nations were never destined to coexist as one country. Lord Lugard’s proclamation has proven to be a failed experiment that has led to ongoing strife.
Keeping Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in the custody of the Nigerian DSS for the mere act of seeking self-determination is not only a grievous violation of his fundamental human rights but also an unforgivable transgression against international law. This highlights a troubling reality: world leaders are too often indifferent to the tenets of justice upheld by international frameworks.
The world has witnessed the appalling aftermath of the Lekki Toll Gate massacre, where those culpable for the unprovoked killings of Nigerian youth roam free, while the former president who sanctioned these atrocities was eulogized and buried like royalty, with his family basking in the benefits of full-blown gratuities. Meanwhile, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu—merely advocating for self-determination—suffers in unjust confinement, deprived of essential medical care.
The powerful petition authored by Olusola Oni serves to once again vindicate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, underscoring his genuine intent to foster peace among the three nations bound together in a forced union by the British, specifically to relieve the British government of the obligation to provide financial support to the Northern regions.
It is time to stop scapegoating Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as the architect behind the Lekki Toll Gate killings in 2020. It’s time to cease the narrative that blames him for the widespread hardship, poverty, kidnappings, herdsmen-related violence, and terrorism plaguing Nigeria.
